Handgun Calibers in a Handi
« on: December 31, 2011, 02:34:28 AM »
I just love to hunt with these little guns in the handgun calibers. I have a 45BC Carbine already and want another caliber. What I would like to know is, what are effective hunting range of the different calibers. I know the 45LC can kill efficiantly out to 100yd.

The calibers I'm intrested in is  357 mag, 357 max, 44 mag, and the 454

A handgun round with a good magnum powder in a long gun turns into a whole new animal. With no cylinder gap and the longer barrel the increase in speed is really nice. While I don't shoot the Handi's anymore my favorite long gun is chambered for the 45 Long Colt. I'm confident out to 150 yards with the load I shoot behind a Hornady 250 gr XTP.

i love my .357 max.  A 180 grain bullet at 2200-2300 fps is deadly out past 200 yards (1000ftlbs energy for deer). and it doesnt kick very much at all perhaps less than a 30-30. its a lot of fun and cheap to shoot as long as you reload. plus you can shoot .38s and .357 mag in it for more versatility.  if you dont reload then i would say go with 454 for more range or .357mag for shorter shots and cheap ammo.  the .44 will do everything your .45 can

If you already have a 45, the one that makes the most sense would be the 357, after all, the only animal of size you would shoot is a deer, and that season lasts a few weeks at best. For anything else the lighter faster load of the 357 would be cheaper and better, The 357 will take deer out to 100 yards with any care in shooting, and coyotes and varmints to 150 possibly. It is also cheap and easy to load.

Yup, there are a few here, I have the reamer, but it requires a stub or at least a liner since there's no H&R barrel suitable for just a rechamber.

You need to move to NC, deer season is September to January 1 (including Bow-ML-Gun).
My brothers .357 has dealt with deer, rabbits (with a .38), foxes, and coyotes on his farm. I plan on having one by next season, just debating the Maxi ream at this point.
