Took my 44 mag out today
« on: December 29, 2011, 08:30:10 PM »
I recently got my 18 3/4 inch 44 mag barrel back from Ilion.  It is on an SB2 45-70 synthetic frame/stock.  I also put a Williams peep sight on it.  I took it out today to get it sighted in and in general check it out.  I picked up a box of Remington UMC 180 grain soft points.  Not what I wanted, but it was the only thing the local Gander Mtn had on their shelf.  After getting the sights sorted out I managed a 3 shot 1 hole group.  Once I moved it back to 50 yards though, things changed.  The group opened up to 4 inches.  I am blaming the group mostly on my eyes.  The extra distance made sighting notably harder.  I think a different target may have helped, one that is easier to see at that distance.  I am also convinced that I want to change the standard sight blade to something with a bead on it, and something finer than what H&R supplies.

Of course a scope would help, but I just can't bring myself to scope it.  It is too slim and trim to spoil.  And it is a short range weapon anyway.

Four inches at 50 yards wouldn't be too bad a group if you were shooting off hand standing, but if you shot off a rest, the gun even with bad eyes should do better than that.

Old eyes can do that to you though, and I know all about that!

I have a 45 LC carbine that I felt the same way about in that I didn't want to spoil such a compact little rifle by putting a scope on it, but I wanted to hunt with it, and low light and my eyesight wouldn't allow that to happen without some glass, so I ended up putting a scope on it, and never looked back!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Regardless of accuracy, Im keeping it.  It already is an easy 50 yard deer rifle, where I hunt I rarely shoot a deer farther than that.

Of course I have lots more experimenting to do and sights to improve upon.
