45 colt BC Shoots really high
« on: December 29, 2011, 08:34:05 AM »
Well this thing shoots really high. I have the small insert down as far as it will go and the ramp down as well. I have tried bullets from mild to wild and they all shoot about 1 ft high at 70yds. There is no more adjstment to the sites. Does H&R offer a taller site for this? If not, what else works?

The standard CR45LC front sight is a Marbles 57W which is .570" high, it's been reported to be a problem before, best advice other than a taller replacement front sight which I didn't find, is to use a fine sight, that is to bury the bead in the rear sight notch and hold 6'Oclock.  :-\ The only other dovetail sight H&R offers is the .584" 17A Lyman globe sight for the 45-70 BC, you might PM Brian56 and see if he has a recommendation, I'm sure he's dealt with it before.

On second thought, seems to me the problem before was it was too tall and shot low, are you sure you're holding the rifle well? Mine has terrible muzzle jump when shooting on bags due to the drop in the stock which could account for the high POI.

I had the same issue, I switched to a Lyman 20A globe which is .700" high and a Williams FP rear peep sight. I highly recommend that setup.

You can also try taking the step adjustment out of the rear sight, this will drop it down lower also.  With mine set up this way it will shoot 3" high at 50 yds with standard level .45 colt loads.  With heavier loads (top level Colt but not Ruger level loads) it will shoot 2" high at 50 and about that much low at 100.  That's acceptable for me.  44 Man

I am not going to hunt with this unless Iowa changes the laws. No rifles. I am just busting clay birds and cans at the range with it. I don't like to use Kentucky windage. I gave Brian a PM and he thinks it might be a bent barrel. Says he can straighten it out under warrenty. Just waiting to hear back from him on where to send it, an to whom.
