New 22 hornet bull barrel and thanks Brian!
« on: December 27, 2011, 09:49:38 AM »
Folks,

I just wanted to let everyone know I sent a receiver to H&R almost 2 weeks to the date for a hornet barrel and it arrived today. Much faster than I figured, moreover during the holidays...... ;D And the fit looks great!

Also, I'm not certain of the story with this barrel but its a 22" bull barrel with a 1:12 twist and an ejector. I'm guessing its old stock since it has the ejector. The ejector will take some getting used to but its sort of neat and it brings back memories of rabbit hunting with my old H&R 410 when i was 12. I'm going to get a scope mounted on it today and try to shoot it in the next couple of days. I'll report back after I get a few rounds through it. And I have to thank Brian 56 for letting me know about the barrel.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and have a happy holiday.

Matt

I didn't know they ever made a bull barrel Hornet. What does the barrel measure at the muzzle?

Thanks for the link Tim.
The term "rare as hens teeth" really does apply to that one. ;D

It would be cool to see them do as Savage does and chamber any round they chamber in any barrel contour they make.

Spanky, the muzzle is right at .80"

Moorepower, I agree, it would be cool.

Thanks for the link Tim. It's interesting that Shaners is 24" and mine is 22". When I ordered it i was given an item number for it so it makes me think there could be more. I was also expecting to pay the higher price of $114 like the other bull barrels but they only charged me the standard barrel price of $96 so i was surprised again.

Got me a pound of lilgun and 250 40 grain v-max...hoping it works as well in this rifle as it does in my other hornet. Weather permitting I'll find out tomorrow.

Ive never heard of or seen a heavy barreled .22 hornet. My hornet is one of my favorite handi's. My dad and grandpa both have one and I have shot both so when I saw one in the store for under $200 it made its way to my house. I havent started reloading but its favorite round so far has been hornady's 35gr v-max. Congrats on the purchase.

Try Winchester 46g white box. Many of us that have had 22 Hornet Handis will tell you that ammo shoots really well, even before you put the first 50 rounds down the barrel. Enjoy.

Well, I tried to reply with photos and then lost the whole thing so I gonna try again.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, i appreciate it. I think the hornet is my favorite round to play with. I have a savage 24f 22h/20g that i load with cast rounds and a little red dot for squirrel hunting. I used to load full power jacketed loads and buck shot  for coyotes but i hate switching from jacketed to cast bullets.

Anyway, so far i think it shows some promise. Only took it out to 50 yards this time. I'll try to stretch its legs out 100-150 this weekend.

I shot a total of 30 rounds through it this morning. 11.5, 12.1 and 12.5 gr of lil gun all with the 40gr v-max.

These are not the best groups because I set up like I call coyotes....a bucket and some form of sticks. But in all i think it shows some patterns with the loads and gives me a place to work around.

First the set up i used

Then the group with 12.1 grs

then i went to the 12.5 grain loads

And finally the 11.5 gr loads. the last group i shot was with my last 12.1 gr loads so i only had 4 left. The first shot was at the one and the last 3 were at the first hole.

A little more work and a few more rounds through it and I think it will make a ground hog killing machine.
