Rem 760 O rings??
« on: December 26, 2011, 12:23:49 PM »
I was reading an old post about this subject. i have a 1973 model 760 in 30.06, i never noticed any problems. how do you know if O ring is bad? it is a mechanical action not like a 1100 or 742. what does the O ring do?

It is my understanding the O ring is used as a load bearing surface so there's no metal to metal contact. If it's "bad" (broken or worn) the fore end will rattle. A few drops of oil on the tube the fore end rides on helps keep things in running order. ;)

To Dave in WestVA- Sorry I don't have solution for your rifle-never had one. But as the O-ring thing goes for Rem 1100s vs 11-87s! I have several Rem 1100s w no O-ring issues since 1980! My Rem 11-87 LEO 14" bbl ate o-rings like Cheerios! As a State Agency Trainer I replaced hundreds in the 2 years before I retired and all we got from Remingtom Reps were lies about performance and reliability!  It took power tools to clean the 11-87s! My 870 with an extended mag/side saddle for a tota 14 rds on board when I bailed out a search warrant was the best. Rem 11-87 was a down-grade for us. (Politics)

bubbinator, thanks for the reply. The O ring used for semi auto Remington rifles & shotguns is for a gas seal. On pumps obviously there's no gas to seal. IMHO a hard nylon or other hard plastic with good wear properties would be better for the pumps than using an O ring.

There are no o-rings in Rem. semi auto rifles , they are direct impingment actions . I've often wondered why the o-rings in the pumps weren't made of a tougher material ! That being said , as both a user of these guns and a smith it would be a blessing and a curse if they did make a tougher o-ring !

I stand corrected. :-[ ;)
I've only delt with Rem 1100 shotguns.
