My latest brilliant idea: 3" M&P S&W .41 Magnu
« on: January 16, 2004, 10:30:00 AM »
Years ago I had a S&W M-58, 4" .41 Magnum.  It was the plain jane M&P model with fixed sights, but it was a jewel.  Foolishing I traded it off for something else I though I couldn't live without and have long regretted that impetuous decision.

Thinking back, it occurs to me that a M-58 with fixed signts, a round butted frame and a 3" barrel would really be cool.  The 3" barrel seems like a really ideal revolver barrel length.  I do not invision this a full powered, maximum load type magnum, but rather as a comfortable, compact, handi "carry gun" and shooter.

My .02.

Anybody else  have any thoughts along this line?

........DON'T hold me to this but I THINK I remember seeing one of those guns......I used to travel with  fellow shooters to matchs and they were grads of the SW armours school and made friends with several at the factory and I got to meet and see things or hear about them.....and seems the 3 in.58 was one of them....maybe Lew Horton?...they used to have all kinds of "limited run-specials" made for them and most were sold before they even were know to exist to the normal dealers.......again this is from 25-30yrs ago and would have been very limited run.........I have no idea how you could find out but maybe some lucky owner will see this and post.......hth..good luck and good shooting!!

If I read this correctly, you are considering turning a K frame Model 10/M&P .38 into a .41 Mag.

Someone help me if my recollection is flawed.  I think the .41 Mag Models 58 and 57 are N (Magnum) framed.

Maybe make it a "modern" .41 Long Colt instead?  Really like the 3" barrel idea!

S&W kinda sorta made your idea at one time but they discontinued it about 2 years ago. It was a 3" barrel, round butt L frame, only it was a 44 special with adjustable sights, model # 696. I bought one when I seen it was discontinued and it is one of my favorite revolvers. I think they still make about the same gun in lightweight alloy frame but I am not for sure.

Last summer I bought a 3" 657 over the internet.  The bbl was magnaported, I paid $425, and i also got 2 speedloaders, and two holsters.  This bbl may have been cut down by a previous owner, but I love it!  Some of my friends at work look at me funny, when they see me carrying an N Frame as an off duty carry piece, but I don't care.  I'm big enough to conceal it.
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

The only thing I didn't like about my 58 was the ungodly muzzle blast.  Full house loads in a 58 require the use of earplugs or muffs for every shot. My 6" 57 is much quieter though you wouldn't think 2" of barrel would make that much difference. My own preference for a short barrelled large caliber carry gun is the .45 long colt. much quieter in any short barreled gun.

I had one of those 3-inch 657's years ago, and wish I had it back.  Lew Horton had a run of 3,000 made in the late 80's, and they were gone quickly.  I shot mine every chance I got, but when my department mandated nothing over 357 for off-duty, I traded it for God-Knows-What.  As the chinese say, we are "too soon old and too late smart!"  I found that a Pachmayr compact grip for a K-frame would stretch to fit it, and that was how I carried it most of the time, even though the factory grips were pretty slick.  I now have a Taurus 441 3-inch, and it's close but just not the same.
Wonder if we could get Lew Horton to make another run for us?
BTW LGM270, send me your e-mail address and I'll send you a picture of my old 657....what a beaut!
