Did my Chronograph lie?

  I was looking to load some warm cast lead bullet loads for me 45LC buffalo classic carbine yesterday. Looked up a load in the contender book I have that said 17.9 gr 2400 with 250 gr bullet. Now this was the max load. Showed coming out of their 10 inch barrel at about 1250 fps.
 
 Loaded up 5 and since it was almost dark only one of them registered. Think is it said it was traveling at 2360 fps. Is this right?? I loaded some more to try today but didn't get home in time. There wern't any signs of excessive pressure and looking on the net I found some loads  higher than this people were shooting out of pistols. If my chrono didn't lie that is one stout load! Obviously too hot for lead really but...

Longer barrels can make a significant difference in velocities on some loads. I'm not familiar with the 45 LC, but you can look on Ballistics by the Inch.

I'd say the chrony was too close to the muzzle or defective, 250gr jacketed loads run a little over 1900fps in my 20" BC Carbine using Hodgdon Ruger/TC Lil'gun data.

I was thinking the chrono was not telling the truth either. First time I get the chance I'm gonna check them again. I was about 10-15 ft from it but I'm going with a bad reading also .. Thanks everyone!

 Not unusual for a chrono to give false readings, several things can mess with'm, light being a biggy.

 I've been working with my 223, had some nice loads clocking 3400fps in Sept, went out this weekend with some loaded with different seating depths, but the temps where in the 30's.
 1st few rounds over the chrony showed they we're at 7940  :o and No Pressure Signs!
You can bet I'm gonna load some more of THOSE!  Shazam! I own the flattest shooting 223 on the planet!

Chrony error.  There is no way on Earth to get a .223 7,940 FPS.

Justus `cause Shooting Chrony say's their unit's won't wurk gud in da cold don't mean my gun's ain't da bestest onna them 223s thay's ever been in da whole wide world!!
 
 
(silly, of course it was error. Battery might be wore out too. After the 3rd shot I folded it up and put it all away)

Quickload says that charge of #2400 behindv a 250 grain bullet should produce about 1530 fps. It is possible to get more velocity, even over 2,000 fps, but only at higher pressures (30,000 psi) and longer COL. Who would want too? If one wants to shoot .45-70 class loads why not get a .45-70.

Yes, it lied.  It happens.  I had one tell me that my 45 auto loads with a 260 grain bullet from a 3 3/4 inch barrel were doing over 4,300 fps.  I thought not and called Chrony to get it fixed.

That was pretty close to the Quickload estimate wasn't it? And in a straight case.

Since a lie is an intentional untruth I think you need to do some investigatory followup and try to determine if your Chrony was actually trying to decieve or if it was just having a bad hair day.

 Me thinks you are correct in that I do need to do some investigation on this situation. that will of course require extreme amounts of shooting.... Humm like that is a bad thing??? :)
