221 Fireball to 17 Fireball
« on: December 16, 2011, 12:41:02 PM »
Can you buy 221 fireball brass and put it in a 17 fireball die making 17 fireball brass?  The 221 brass is less expensive and easier to find.  I just hate to pay 45 dollars for 221 brass, then find out that for some reason, it can't be done.  Has anyone tried this?
Thanks for your time,

I don't think it's that simple. Back before the .17 Fireball it was called the Mach IV and I seem to recall you needed at least one intermediary sizing die to get you down to 17 caliber.

Why not just buy .17 Fireball brass?

No problem. I have formed the 221 brass to the 17 MK IV with no problems. If you want to play it real safe you can run it through the seater die befor you run it through the sizeing die. I alway dip the necks into some number 12 shot with mica in it.

GB,  Why not 17 fireball brass?  221 Brass is easier to find and less expensive.

And thank you catfish, I will get some and give it a go.

ps: Nosler has now come out with .17 diameter bullets in 20 grain, although I haven't seen any at our local rifle shoppes yet.
