Reloading for a 7400

While speaking with a friend yesterday he said he wanted to reload for his 7400. Some of the factory ammo he fired expelled gas in his face and he's not real happy with other factory ammo offered. Fowling and velosity have been his issues. He has the 7400 carbine in 30-06. I remember reading somewhere that you need to be careful of the powder you use. The burn rate has to be correct in order not to damage the rifle or leave a lot of unburned powder in the barrel and gas operation much the same with the M1 Garrand. What has your experience been? He wants to use 165 and 180 SGK bullets.

I was tossing the coin if this should be in the relaoding forum but it is a sepcific question about the 7400 carbine.

Freezer:  I think his best bet is to use faster burning powders like the IMR 3031, 4895 and 4064.  I have enjoyed success with those powders but also I found that the Remington factory 180s shoot just as well as any reloads I have ever put through some specific 7400s.  HTH.

I've had a 742 since 1967.  Mine likes small bass dies and medium loads.  I shoot 150 grain bullets in my 06's.

I've never heard of gas hitting a shooter unless the primer is pierced and even then the action is designed to deflect that gas away from the shooter. The gas system from a Garand vs 7400 action is very different and so is the system on the M-14. I've used H-414 with 180 gr bullets and H-4831 with 200 grainers from a shortened 742 without problems.
 
 The 742 has a small steel ball seated inside the gasport. I don't know if it is similar with the 7400. Perhaps that ball has been removed?

I agree something doesn't sound right!  I've never had gas in the face shooting my 7400.

I your friend is going to reload for it,  get some good bullets and start at the starting loads and work up some good powders are H4895, IMR 4895 and for heavy bullets IMR 4350.   Mine also likes the moderate loads -best accuracy.  ;D

The only powder gases into my face I ever had the misfortune to endure was courtesy of Uncle Sam while shooting Rifle Grenades off the M-1 Garand. :o
