Katahdin Barrels
« on: November 30, 2011, 01:28:07 PM »
Howdy fellas.

Usually if I look long enough, I can figure these things out on my own, but this time I will rely on the wisdom of my fellow shooters.

I see from time to time where some of you sell a Katahdin barrel.
Now that I own one in .500 S&W, I would like to know what is so nice or great about them?
What makes them special?
Just wondering. I've not had a chance to shoot mine, so I don't know if they shoot any better or not.
Was hoping perhaps you guys might be able to tell me.

Thanks for any info.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

I don't claim to know much, but from what I've seen on the guns and read on the internet, the Katahdin barrels are either 18 or 20 inches long and come equipped with a barrel mounted peep sight system.  Regular barrels are 24, 26 or 28 inches long and can come with regular sights or scope mount only.  All the Katahdin barrels I've seen are either ML, 45-70, 460 S&W, or 500 S&W.  Apologies if I'm wrong on any of this.

I have one on 209x50 and it shoots like a dream with any type of powder .

Likes 100grs, of 2FF black the best with a CCI 209 primer and a TC 250GR Shock Wave bullet .

All bullets touching at 100 yards with a Leupold 1.75x6x36 scope !

It is a real nice barrel in the woods and has no problem out to 150 yards.

My stainless Pro Hunter Katahdin barrel in 500 S&W mag shot better than I could hold it. It favored the 350 gr JHP's over a dose of Lilgun and would stack them at 100 yds if I did my part. What it didn't like was the light loads I tried in it. 360 gr lead over a dose of Unique. My S&W pistol loved that load but the Encore would scatter them. Only reason I got rid of my barrel was to fund a differnt caliber from MGM.

I've had one in 45-70 and 12ga for quite a number of years and love'em.  Don't know that they shoot any better or worse than regular barrels.  Like any short, handy barrel they are easier to carry but harder to hold steady.

I'll second what 30 Herrett said. My 209x50 shoots as good as groups as my 209x50 Endevor barrel. But I like the
20 inch in the woods and shooting shack. Very nice handling.

I also have the 209X50 and the 18" 45/70 (great pig gun) and I love them. Especially in woods or tight areas, very fast handling.
