A-bolt .300 Win Mag.

This is my first post and this looks like a great site for information so here goes. I just bought a new LH Browning A-bolt Medallion in .300 Win Mag. I have not shot it yet but am geting concerned about peoples input about the amount of recoil this gun will produce. I already have and shoot a 7mm Rem Mag. and a .308 Norma Mag. My question is should the .300 Winny Mag be any worse then what I already have? Also what are peoples opinions of the Browning Medallion in general? Thanks

ORsouthpaw:  If you already shoot a 7mm RM and a 308 NM, that 300 Winny shouldn't bother you at all.  And, I just love the A-Bolts, I think they are smooth and classy rifles.  Just my 2 cents.  Mikey.

     I love my A-bolt in .308 and have taken at least 50 or more hogs with it over the years.  Mine is stainless steel and has spent most of it's life hunting in the swamp.  It's my mud gun.  I don't always keep it as clean as I should but it has never failed me.  The gun shoots less than an inch with just about anything I put in it.  Does the medallion have the BOSS system?  My feeling about recoil is the more you shoot, the less it bothers you.  SC hog hunter

Nope, I decided against the BOSS system because of added length and the added noise. A friend of mine has a .300 Win Mag in a Browning BAR with the BOSS and he said the the noise is so extreme that he will not use it elk hunting again unless he has hearing protection. If I was target shooting I would probably have opted for the BOSS because I know it helps accuracy but since this gun will be for Elk and Mule Deer I coudn't see the benefit. Thanks for the feedback!

i would say that you won't feel too much difference between the 300 and the 7mm mags.  I've used and shot both.  I since upgraded to a 300 Rem Ult. mag, which if your used to shooting those big mags it dosen't recoil any more than your used to.

Check out Chuck Hawks recoil tables.  They should give you an idea of the difference between the calibers you are talking about.

300 Win. Mag. (180 at 2960) 8.5lb rifle  25.9lbs of recoil
7mm Rem. Mag. (150 at 3100) 8.5lb rifle 19.2lbs of recoil

i think you made a great choice on the browning, all that i have shoot great.  my 300wm is a pussy cat in the recoil department i dont mind shooting 20 to 30 cartridges a day.  just my .02 cents thanks blake.....

I have a Winchester Classic Stainless in .300 WM with the BOSS.  I agree, the noise level is too high and I too would not shoot it without hearing protection.  Still, the recoil is very mild with the BOSS and the gun is EXTREMEMLY accurate.  With 180 grain PMC Barnes X bullets, 3 bullets touch each other at 100 yards - hard to beat that!

The limb saver works....

I finally got my M-77 .338 Win Mag from the gunsmith with the limb saver pad installed. I had never shot anything larger than at 7mm Mag before this. I was very impressed with the perceived recoil on this gun after installing the pad. If I were you and had concerns I would definately look at this pad installed as an option.

I have heard the same thing before regarding the LimbSaver recoil pad. The Navcom Material that they use is super absorbent when it comes to vibration absorbtion. I have a PSE Avenger compound bow that has almost every LimbSaver product on it and have been impressed with their archery products.
