Leupold Quick Release Question/Theory
« on: January 13, 2004, 03:40:28 AM »
Fellas,

Have any of you attempted to use the QR system for using one scope with multiple barrels?  A buddy of mine and I were talking last night and we figure it's not outside the realm of possibility that you could zero the scope on one barrel, switch it to another barrel, and record the adjustments made to re-zero it on that barrel.  Then you could just make the recorded adjustments each time you switched the scope.  It sounds good in theory, but will it actually work?  Thanks in advance for your responses!

Given the QR's reputation for repeatability, I think this would work - IF you have very consistent scope adjustments.  With a good scope (repeatable adjustments), you should at least be able to get "minute of deer" or so.  I wouldn't count on being able to switch from your deer rifle barrel to your .22-250 and shooting prairie dogs at 500 yards, but I bet the reverse would work.

I have considered this exact thing a million times.  I use the Warne mounts and figured this method would get you close but I haven't tried it yet.  Sounds good in theory though.

I friend of mine went that route and  the gun only made it to the range one time. He got the Leupold QR rings and they wouldn't stay tight. He finally took a pair of pliars and really sinched them down but by then he lost all confidence in them. I thought  they would break using the pliers on them. He traded them for standard rings.

I too intended to swap scopes between barrels, still may.  I bought an Encore 209X50 and topped it with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40mm.  I chose the Warne Maxima set-up with the QD medium height rings.  I plan on getting a 24" .308 barrel sometime down the road.  Thought I could swap the scope between these two barrels recording the click changes between zeros.  Also intended to use the QD rings to remove the scope from the ML barrel for cleaning purposes . . . haven't done that yet - haven't seen the need.

Silver or Stainless?

Find myself wondering why Leupold does not make this QR base in Stainless Steel.  Seems it would be a great choice for leaving on a SS barrel without worries of rust after washing the ol' blackpowder down and not having to worry about moisture trapped between the base and the barrel.

Any ideas why they don't?
