new project
« on: November 08, 2011, 09:57:14 AM »
I've built 2 of these in the past, both for brother-in-law's birthdays, and wanted one for my own.  I've got a few things to shoot but not as big as this.  The barrel is Brook's longer 50 cal howitzer.  Longer than his standard one, it has nicer proportions and is actually kind of contemporary looking.  Plus mine had to be bigger than the brother in laws.  The plan is a naval carriage first then eventually a field carriage (if I can pull off wheels).  Here's a shaded image from the carriage cad file and the barrell and plans.

I started from an image in Round shot and Rammers and alterd the proportions to fit the barrel.  I'm actually making 2 carriages, one teak and one hickory.  It's kind of an experiment, set up and do the cuts more than onece.  I'm tempted to polish up the barrel to get a glamour shot in the teak carriage and then patina it for the hickory barrell.  We'll see how my motivation holds out.  Here's the glue up.

Here's the loose assembly before the cutting was finished.

Finally made something for real on my new-to-me lathe.  Turning the axles and wheels.

Sorry if I'm jumping arround a little, in a hurry.  I'm further along than this but haven't take more pics yet.

thanks.

Thanks C-dubya.

I'm haveing a heck of a time finding time to work on this, and I'm sure the upcoming holidays will help.  Anyway everything is sanded and has 3 coats of wipe-on poly.  I'm still suprised how tedeous sanding in little corners can be.  The poly is nice because it's thin enough to easily apply even coats and it dries quickly in between.  It's also a satin finish.  Here are some pics of the teak carriage with the barrel.  I'm likeing the barrel more and more as I work with it.

So far I like the way it's coming together though I wish I had more time.  The axles are covered with brass tubing and are drilled for a pin to hold the wheels on.  Brass pins will also be used to mechanically hold the pieces together.  Instead of through-bolting or screwing I'm going to drill through the pieces and epoxy the pins into place.  I like the simplicity of minimal hardware on such a small piece.  Cap squares will have accorn nuts so the barrel can be easily removed.  Next is the metal work and details, then the big boom.

thanks

Very nice build you have going there, I admire the simplicity and clean lines of both barrel and carriage.  Other than cap squares, what other hardware would you need?

Thanks.  It will get the pins to help hold it together, eylets and rings.  And a small "handle" for the barrel elevation/wedge/thingy.  What do you call that?

It is looking good ! 8)   Those 'glue up photos' could almost be calender shots .

As an original member of Uncle Sams Matchless brass Club I would most definatly shine it up till you get tired , call it good take your glamor shots for the calender or as proof of DDs's cupie doll award worthiness .  ;D

Then fire it and it will just start turning on its own . Of course if you want a certian color of patina then maybe you should give it a chemical patina

(groan! :) )

Perhaps so.  A quoin is also (in architecture) the blocks that tie together the corners of a building.   Might not be so far off - it locks it in.
