Browing A-bolt II trigger
« on: January 11, 2004, 07:05:22 PM »
Just bought a ABolt II in 7mm WSM and am messing with the trigger ajustment. The book says adjustable from 3-6 pounds. When I lighten it is has alot of overtravel. When I tighten it- it is much harder (which is expected) but no overtravel. Could I replace the factory trigger spring with a lighter one? If a could then I could tighten it down with no overtravel and still be in the 3# trigger pull range. If this is possible do I just have to take out the pin holding the trigger and access the spring that way?                       thanks

Buy a spring kit from Midsouth Shooters Supply.  Takes less than 5 mins to replace.  After that you shout be able to get 1.5 pounds to about 3 pounds.  The kit is about $12

I am unfamiliar with the Abolt II but all triggers have three possible adjustments.  Although some only allow you to easily adjust 2 of the 3.  The three are - creep - pull weight - over travel.  Lightening the pull weight should have no effect on overtravel.  Clean the trigger assembly and try again.  I looking at the schematic is looks as if the pull adjustment is altering the tension on the trigger return spring. The parts affected are 85-87.  The spring is the trigger return.  Changing it's tension should not effect the overtravel, which is motion of the trigger after the sear has released.  If lowering the pull weight alters the overtravel the fix is to install a lighter spring of the same length..  so that the adjustment spring can be maintained at it's current level..  The alternative is adjust whatever is acting as a stop..

The spring kit is for the A-bolt, will it also work for the A-boltII?
Do you know specifically what the procedure is to put the spring kit in?
I agree that the overtravel should not change with the trigger pull adjustment- but it must be the way Browning designed this particular trigger. I think I should be able to put a lighter spring in and then adjust the pull so there is very little overtravel. Brownings manual says that if you increase the trigger pull too much it will not fire.

AJT,
Remove the trigger guard.  Move the trigger foward slide out old spring from behind trigger and place new one.  The kit comes with two springs.  One is for 2 pounds and the other for 3 pounds.  I've havedone this to 7 Abolt II and one Abolt.  Using the 2 pound trigger I have been able to get 1.5 pounds out of all of them.  The post where the spring is placed is where you adjust poundage.  You should notice a small notch at the end of the post.  Tighten all the way down and check.  Turn out 1/4 turns untill you get the feel you like.  Once this is done replace trigger guard and you are ready to rock and roll.

Forgot one step.

You need to remove the trigger pin in order to move the trigger forward.   No big thing.
