Please keep in mind..Walmart is one retailer which has been selected out by the unions, the trial lawyers and just about all other democrat/liberal supporters as "the one we want to break"..
Go ahead and buy from Walmart and thank them..with the many liberal gang of robbers and slanderers after Walmart..they arer showing great courage to handle guns & ammo at all...
     TARGET sure doesn't !!

I havent bought from for a long time, or really even want to go into the , over priced big box 'Gan.' stores here. They want you to 'adopt' the gun, and I just heard they are getting out of reloading supplies/equipment (rumor so far). I aint gonna buy over priced yuppie outdoor clothes or stuff; I dont need them because they decided they dont need me. Werent they the ones that had the ad saying,"we live outdoors"?
It seems the 'small shops' have to pay too high a wholesale on small orders for guns and accessories. Add in a little markup to stay in business and they cant compete with the discounted wholesale and cost averaging of places like Wally.

I might be able to accept this "Walmart' kind of treatment with a weapon, but when I was trying to buy a Leupold scope at "Walmart" ( BAKER, La.) the clerk would not let me have two scopes on the counter at the same time to compare them side by side. This was nine years ago and I have not been back. I went to the local Academy store and not only did I have several scopes on the counter, the clerk took me out the back door with two scopes for a natural sunlight look through both. FWIW ended up with a Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x50.

Dicks and Bass Pro? Really?
Yup! I had that experience in Dick's.  I believe the practice started in the 70's, in the cities.  That's what happened when I purchased a Marlin 336, from of all places a Woolworth's in NYC.

I have two Dick's Sporting goods near me.   I have purchased from one and handled from both.    Neither store used trigger locks,  and when it came time to handle,  the employee opened the action, checked for clear, and handed it to me to inspect the barrel and the trigger.
I think I have to clarify my answer, I didn't mean to say that Dick's wouldn't allow me to handle the gun.  Dick's firearms are behind the counter, and locked to the racks.  When you want to see the gun the sales rep does what gstewart44 stated.  What I meant to say was that after I purchased the rifle, a Dick's employee, walked me and the wrapped firearm to the exit of the store.

So I went by ALs sporting goods after work today.  They were great as usual.  I ended up buying the 12 ga. pardner for $6 cheaper than walmart was selling it for.

I used to work in Sporting Goods at Wal-Mart when I was in college, and that is a policy even back then. ('90-'95)

I hate Wal-mart now that Sam has died.  They have made it their business to run others out of business, and then cut their selection and service.  If you knew some of their practices you would not shop there either if you could help it!  I still go there because, unfortunatley they have run most of the other businesses out.  As a result, there was not a decient gun store in the town , save one, until this last mad scramble for guns and ammo.  Now two more have opened up.

I would rather go to a good gun store any day!

I have a decent gun store about 7-8 miles from my house.  It's on a back road but all the guys know about it.  Used to buy Walmart , but have recently went in his direction.  he treats my legion post real good for raffles and his prices are super.
Last gun I bought from him was a basic Savage 93 in .22 mag w/accutrigger... Brand new @ $179  ...I couldn't pass it up.
Haven't had a .22 mag shoot so good since I had the Anschutz in .22 mag.which has long ago gone to my grandson. In fact, I think the Savage shoots a bit better.

Alls well that ends well.  I love stories that have a happy ending. Now start saving  money for your next gun.

I have had/seen the same thing at most all the big retailers. When you buy in some of them you sign a paper telling how many under age children you have and what storage is acceptable etc

Which big retailer required a signature asking how many under age children one has or storage place of the gun?  I've never heard of such a thing and not sure I even believe it..........

Wait until you open the bolt of a gun and pop a cartridge out of the chamber!  I saw this at a gunshow, someone apparently thought causing someone to die would be a funny thing to do, in this case I'm really glad for safety measures since implemented.

Went in today to buy my first H and R, a 12 ga. pardner.  The sporting goods guy hands me the gun to look at and I ask if he will take off the trigger lock.  He says he cant.  Then he does to let the hammer back down that someone had cocked and I ask if I can look at it since he has it opened. He says I cant and puts it back on.  I said I am interested in buying it and have cash on hand and he said, sorry store policy.  I said thanks for your time and walked out.

I understand store policy and what not, but do they really expect to sell anything if they wont let the customer check out the gun properly.  I guess there is that one in a million chance some nut job will have a shell in his pocket and put it in and go on a shooting spree with a single shot long gun.

Anyone else had this problem?  Thanks for reading, just had to vent.

p.s.  I mean COME ON, it was gonna be my FIRST of many handis!

Unfortunately, back in the late 80's, perhaps the early 90's, Wal Mart HAD a customer with real issues.  Back then, they had handguns as well as long guns, the customer asked to see a Beretta, if I recall correctly, one of the 'wonder nines' with a 15 round capacity, and the customer pulls a loaded mag, one of a few he had in his pocket, inserted it, racked it, and started spraying the place down.  I do not recall how many he killed, but it was shortly afterwards that the lawsuits started, and the policy you are decrying was implemented.
Our store here in SE Idaho, moved it's rifles and shotguns to Pocatello, but I can still special order firearms through them, and pick them up.  Yes, it's a pain in the butt to have to be walked out, and handed it outside the store, but most of the time, well worth it.  It's been a long time since I bought a new firearm, but I have bought a new rifle or two and a shotgun from Wal Mart, and no one in the area could touch the prices for what I bought.
And, no, I'm NOT related......but, like Wal Mart, I HAVE told the union to pack sand.
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

for what it's worth, I live in South MS and a local Pawn/gun shop Gautier, MS here appears to match internet pricing on guns/scopes/ammo.  I'm looking a a ziess conquest 3x9 40mm for 379.00  also, a Leupold vx-3, 40 mm for 429.0 .  VX-3 3.5x10 50mm 525 for silver one, he said the matte black is a little cheaper .  I'm looking to get the 50mm matte black (all duplex reticle).  ammo competitive pricing as internet/walmart/academy also.

then again.  Academy locally had Stevens 200 .270, tan stock 179.00 earlier in the spring.  i couldn't pass it up.   also, last fall at a walmart in Hat tiesburg, they had 30-006 savage w/acutriger and Bushnell 3x9 40 scope, 299.00.  last gun he gets from me I hope.

I was eying the same 30-006 in another walmart for 379 or so, that certain store were just moving stock i guess.

recommend look around for a small shop that's competitive.  I've found one.  Customer friendly.

Walmart won't let you buy ammo of the same caliber with the gun either.

I've never run into that at any of the multiple Walmarts that I've bought guns from. I've even had the store managers ask me if I needed ammo before they walked me out. I'm fortunate to have a very gun friendly Walmart near me. All of the guys that work the gun counter are actually gun guys that like to shoot. The last gun I bought from there wasn't trigger locked either.

Not sure where you live but I have handled guns without trigger locks in two of our local walmarts.  Both were Savage edge or axis so I could check the trigger pull.  The one guy watched as I slowly pulled the trigger and started chuckling....somewhere around 8 lbs.  I have also watched other customers buy a rifle and ammo at the same time.  They do walk you to the door but no issues handling the rifles.  Guess its just a local thing.  I also agree with others.  Best prices are at the gun shows.  I had a Marlin 357 1894 on order at Walmart.  Had not come in when I was at the local gun show.  Got a better price at show.  Called to check to see if rifle had come in.  No rifle, lady asked why, I told her, she chuckled and said she would cancel my order, buy the one at the show.  I know two small gun shops in central Indiana that will beat Walmart prices all day long. So, my business goes to the business that gives me the best deal and service...period!!

We have (2) Supers within 20 miles of us.  The one right where we live is a bit persnickity on guns, but getting better and the other one is great.  They are quite good with the whole process.  ;)

On a up side our local Walmart now carries IN STOCK the Bushmaster AR15 A they are considering carrying handguns too.  Go figure.

This walmart is in Logan, Ut.  But I will be back in Wyo in a week and the mom and pop shop there is great.  I can get any gun off the internet sent to him for $10.  Which is fine by me.  The closest walmart or any big name anything is two hours away in Idaho Falls.

i to thought it strange the way they sell guns i have bought 3 there had to follow them out the door then the hand it to you. same guns you would pay much more some place else i am with swampman i don't need any more mark up on price. they don't have much of a selection now anyway.be sides if the gun dealer doesn't have it so i can look at it i go some place else .ordering a gun is to problematic done that. gun dealers are not reliable least the ones i have dealt with. ;D

At least you guys have the option to by guns at Walmart.  Here in Oregon they have all stopped carrying guns and the closest one has very little ammo.  The Walmart in the town where my folks live (a little more than an hour from me) has a much better sporting goods section with more ammo.

Quasni,  where you going to land in Wyo?  There are a couple well stocked sporting goods stores in Casper. One of them Rocky Mtn Discount Sports has real good prices.  The nice clerks carry your new gun to the door for you, but they don't have locks on the triggers.

Bilmac, I am moving back to Star Valley.  Not much of anything there.  Just the way I like it.  I ordered my .308 survivor and .22 mag sportster yesterday.  Should be here in a week or so.  Hurray for me!
