Black powder scope on a 45/70 Handi?
« on: October 26, 2011, 08:42:16 PM »
Not sure, if this belongs in this forum or the optics forum, but here goes.  Nikon has a new scope called the Omega in 1.65x5 power, with a BDC designed for black powder guns.  The eye relief is 5", I believe that this is more than sufficient to prevent scope eye brow on a 45/70.
My question is; do you think this scope designed with a BDC (bullet drop compensator) for black powder would work for a 45/70 since the (rainbow type) trajectory is similar?
Also do you think the scope would hold up to the pounding of a 45/70 round?
Thanks for any answers and the reason you believe so.

I have a Nikon Pro Staff 2-7x32 shotgun scope, paralax free at 75 yds. on my Handi 47-70. holds up good so far after over 100 rounds. don't see why a ML scope would'nt be just as good. my .02.

never had much interest in BCDS, sight my rifles at MPBR for the cal. and type of game and don't take shots much beyond that. works for me.

I don't see why it wouldn't work well.  I have standard rifle scopes on both my Huntsman and my .45-70.  Some loads in the .45.70 have a trajectory that are a mirror image of  my hunting load in the Huntsman.  I had a BDC on the .45-70.  It was a cheap scope and I didn't care for it.  I took it off and put a circle X on it and never looked back.  If you shoot a rifle enough, you'll know what your hold over has to be instinctively.  Kinda like shooting a long bow.  A BDC doesn't tell you the distance to the target.  You have to determine that to use it.  I do better without it.  I find the extra horizontal lines distracting.

RevBobby- I also bought one, couldn't resist the price.  What caliber gun are you using it on?  My question was actually directed at whether you could use the BDC for the 45/70 since the trajectory (rainbows) for long distance shots are quite similar with the BP guns for which this scope was designed.

I've been trying to talk myself out of one as I'm scope poor now but I think you just put me over the edge, I can't help but imagine how good the camo version would look on a camo handi!

The BDC system is useful for all loads in most calibers.  Check out Nikon's web site.

I'd have to say only in the lower trap door level loads would they come close.  I think that unless you are trying to hit beyone 200 yards it doesn't accomplish much to use a BDC personally.  I don't really like scopes though, so maybe you guys disagree.  ;)
