wife says i can order a new barrel ?
« on: October 23, 2011, 06:27:22 PM »
wife says i can get a new barrel
narrowed down to a
280
35 whelen
7.62x39

just bought a 223 handi

convince me, most of my shooting hunting is in the wide open spaces of new mexico 200 to 300 yard yards are the norm rather than the exception, hence the 280, black bears are a OTC license so the 35, and the 7.62 ammo is cheap lots of plinking real cheap

With the 200 and 300 yrd. shots I would stick with the 280
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

A .280 will reach out there, but you will probably find a .270 a lot cheaper and it will get the job done on anything in north america.  Just looked, you have a 30-06, just buy her a new dress and make some points, you have every thing you need.  Larry

I have the 308 for elk, and it has killed several mule deer. Also i reload for everything I own. I really like the bullet selection for the 280 weights 100-175 as opposed to the 270 90 to 160, looking for more of a antelope gun. that route, but i have noticed a lot of the eastern and southern contributors like their 35s, never owned a 35 but I am thing might be a good brush gun in the oak brush or mesquite, also read that 357 bullets can be downloaded for plinking

Of the ones you mentioned, I'm guessing the 280 would be best.  From what I read it should do the job, I personally have had no experience with it, but since it uses a modified 30-06 case it has to be good.  My go to gun is a Handi in 30-06.

My question is:  Do you have a Handi in 30-06?

I agree with Larry.  You really don't need anything else, but I'm going to suggest one you didn't mention and that's the 7mm-08.  It'll fill the gap nicely between the .30 calibers and the .223.  I Just re-scoped mine and sighted it in at 200 yards with a 140 gr. bullet and it is point blank to 250 with only a 3 inch drop.  It is 2 inches high at 100.

The 7.62x39 is a lot of fun.  It is very accurate and cheap to shoot....so much so that I just bought dies for it last week, having gotten them for all the other calibers I shoot first.

I agree with Petemi that a 7-08 would be a good option also.  I've always thought of the .280 as more of an Elk cartridge, with the .270 a better choice for antelope.  I really think my 7-08 or .270 will do anything I need in North American except for the big bears.  Probably do that also but I'd feel a lot better going there with a 'bigger gun'.  After what I have read lately, I'd like to see a Handi in 6.5 Creedmore.  It sounds as versitle and useful as a .270 with a little less recoil and a more efficent powder usage for reloaders.  Ah, if wishes were rainbows....   Anyway, you'll likely need all of those calibers you mentioned and should plan to have them all someday!  44 Man

I would get a 7.62x39 if you still can, might not come around again!  Be sure and ask Brian56 about it.  If you like the 7.62 at all I think hands down that would be the one to get.  (but I have a biased opinion!)

Is the 35 whelen still offered in the barrel program?  If it is, may be going the way of the dinosaur too, but I feel like more avaliable in the resale market than the 7.62 according to the classifieds here.  (just my opinion, you know what that means!  No statisics to prove either way!) ::)

That being said, I would really like a .280 reamed out to A.I. ;D

My first choice would be the 280 followed by the 35 Whelen. :)

The 30-30 is a better choice than the 7.62 and the Whelen is troublesome. Out of the three you mentioned the 280 is the only one worth buying.

I am looking for 2  things one a caliber with a less loopy trajectory like the 280 or 270, also i like the 35 as it matches the lower velocities of the 338 winchester mag with the larger bullet diameter, just in case i get that grizzly or moose tag, with the ability to use cheaper 357/38 bullets for keeping gun familiarity, not a big fan of the 30-30 but see the 7.62x39 in the same light, also i am a firm believer you cant have too many calibers or guns or fishing rods, and yes each time i buy a new caliber rifle i buy a pistol to accompany it, see my post Match the Handi to the Handgun.
