Who does good porting with quick turn around?
« on: October 20, 2011, 07:51:11 PM »
I want to get my 45-70 and 460 S&W ported so I can enjoy them a little more.  I know next to nothing about porting, or how the guns will handle afterwards.  I do know that things are going to be louder, and hopefully recoil will get considerably lighter.

So.  Who does a good port and what's an expected turn around time?

I don't like ported or braked barrels, but I'd give SSK a call.   The turn around will be fast.

I had T/Cs custom shop cut my 460 barrel down to 12" , then install their brake.......Didn't notice much , if any , difference...maybe due to shortened length ??  Don't think I'd waste my money on a brake again.  Only my 2 cents worth...good luck  But as to your question..T/C only had my barrel for two weeks.

It makes them louder and the recoil is about the same.

If the recoil is the same then what is the purpose of them?  Seems like they're pretty well endorsed for taming recoil, if all they do is increase noise surely someone would have proven this at some point and they still wouldn't be around anymore?

I'm sure some are better than others in design?  What type did you guys have that had poor results?(Chuck Hawkes said some companies only report up to a 15% decrease in recoil, whereas others report as high as upper 40s).

I really don't enjoy shooting either of those barrels and I feel from an ortho standpoint they can't be good on your joints.  1-2 shots here and there probably aren't bad.  But I like shooting my guns.

How much louder are they?  Beginning to think these big boy pistols aren't for me.

I've never really noticed the recoil.  They do reduce muzzle flip.  I'd have Magnaport do it, they did my .45-70 SSK barrel.  If you reload just consider reducing velocity.  It's the best way.

I had two 45-70 barrels....one was a hunter barrel w/ brake...the other had none.  The braked barrel had almost no muzzle flip where the other barrel would bring the whole pistol up slightly above my head.  But...the braked barrel hit the palm of my shooting hand(the force straight back into my hand and wrist) harder than the non braked barrel.  The noise level was significantly louder with the braked barrel.  It would get everyone's attention at the range.  To me, the non braked barrel was more pleasant to shoot.  And, BTW, I still have the regular barrel, Keith now owns the Hunter barrel. 8)

I would call Magnaport and tell them your wants and concerns..maybe they can guide you and explain the advantages and disadvantages..

The 12" barrel I had was just plain wild...off of the bags it would lift a good foot or so....no holding it down. It was loaded with a max charge of W-296 and a 240 XTP/MAG.  It had T/Cs brake , not sure what they call it.  I have been told their brakes are some of the least effective.  After the "fun" wore off.......I sold it to a GB member.  It was not fun for me anymore :'(

You asked about porting. In my experience porting helps more with muzzle rise than recoil.  A baffled brake does more for recoil.

The JP tank brake is the most effective brake available right now for use on a hand gun. It's loud, it's ugly, and it works. It will help with both recoil and muzzle rise.

Thank you for the clarification on terminology.  I have no experience with either of the two and thought they were synonymous.  So I guess I should be asking who  makes a good muzzle break.

What do these guys charge for this on average?  I thought about loading down on the velocity, but then why shoot a 460.  I could instead shoot a much easier 454 or a hot 45LC.
