TRANSFER BAR PROBLEM
« on: October 19, 2011, 12:37:14 PM »
I have a problem with the transfer bar not dropping most of the time,i can rock the hammer back and forth and it will cause it to drop like it should .Could it be a broken lifter spring? how hard is it to remove the transfer bar and spring to repair it?  thanks

See Perklo's trigger hone link in the FAQs and Help sticky, it includes the t-bar installation, you can order a  replacement spring from Brownells or Numrich, but the only source for the t-bar is Numrich or H&R.

Not a hard thing to do.I just replaced the hammer(Thanks Tim)yesterday and did a polish job on the parts.Took about 45 minutes from start to finish.Perklo's info was right on as far as take down and putting it back together.

Guru,

Does the transfer bar drop if you start to cock the hammer?  If so, it could be that someone removed material from the hammer nose and the hammer is now pinching the transfer bar.

That being the case, a new hammer would be the correct repair.

I  dont think so, you have to rock the hammer back and forth kinda quick to make it drop a little. It wont drop all the time, sometimes it will stay up causing the firing pin to be pushed out a little with the hammer down.

Wonder if someone had it apart and got the spring installed wrong?
If the hammer isnt pinching it in place it should really be falling even by its own weight, and the Trigger Extension, with the trigger returned, shouldnt be holding it in the forward (up) position.
Take it apart and see what youve got.

our local so-called gunsmith had it apart several times. i had a trigger job done on it about 10 years ago and then had it teflon coated by Walter Birdsong with his Black-T finish about a year later. After the teflon coating i guess it made everything a little too slick and the 2.5lb trigger became about 1/2 lb.I took it to the local gunsmith to repair , he replaced the hammer and it has had this problem ever since he worked on it. I took it back to him several times and he never could fix it,so me being the tinkering kinda guy that i am i have decided to try to fix it myself.I have had the trigger assy out of several handis and have made some slave pins but i have never been any further into one that that. How much harder is it to remove the hammer and transfer bar parts?

Download and read Perklo's instructions, they're very detailed on the t-bar installation, as was said the lifter spring can be installed incorrectly, you can use the same slave pin to install it as the trigger.  ;)

When you pop out the trigger and hammer, take a look fron top and bottom at how the t-bar and spring are in there yet, and maybe make a sketch of what it looks like now. It isnt hard to work on, just futzy. Your biggest challenge may be not having a punch skate off the pin and marr up your nice finish, so be extra careful on holding the punch straight and square and bonking it with the hammer square too.

You always have the option to send it to H&R to fix it.  ;)

Perklo's download has very detailed pics of how the spring and release lever are installed, no need to reinvent the wheel here.  ;D

Thanks for the help guys, i got it working. There were two notches that the spring could sit in and it must have been in the wrong one . I moved the spring to the other notch making it have more tension on the spring and the transfer bar is working perfect.
