Problem with vertical stringing
« on: January 10, 2004, 10:01:45 AM »
I recently acquired an Encore in .300 Winchester Magnum.  It is reasonably accurate, but the first round was hitting about 10" high. Then after three or four rounds it would settle down and do fine.  This is the 26" heavy barrel.

The stock and forend are composite.

I decided to relieve the forend enough to float the barrel back to the front screw, and did so by sanding out the front portion of the forend.  This has worked for me on bolt action rifles in the past.

I haven't tried this barrel since, but did try a 24" standard .280 barrel with this forend today, and several three shot groups at 100 yards averaged 4" vertical dispersion.

I'm thinking I need at least one new forend, and I may find I need two after I fire the .300 Win. Mag barrel.

Any suggestions are welcome, either for correcting the problem or for advising me what I did wrong.

TIA,

Bob

I had an Encore barrel 24" in 7m08.  It would do the same thing.  I also sanded out the syn. forend but it still shot high and as the barrel warmed up it would string down until it would drive tacks out to 200 yds.  But it took warm up shots to get there and the barrel would really get warm.  I sent it back and after ckng it out, Thompson sent me another one.  But with 2 barrels doing the same thing you have me stumped.

If there is too much oil in the barrel it will throw your bullet off. That's why I go to the range before deer season. Then clean the barrel after season.

:D I finally got around to calling T/C this afternoon. Seems like my 7mm-08 Encore 24" would  put the first shot 4" high, the second about 2" high, after that it will shoot 1/2' groups all day. It did'nt make any difference if my barrel was clean or left fouled, when its cold the first shot is always high. The Tech. at T/C said there was something definately wrong and I should send it back. I have it packaged and ready to ship tomorrow.

Almost exactly what my 1st 7m08 barrel would do.  I had a new barrel in a week and a half.  Be sure to ask them what was wrong with it.  I think the barrel was not true because mine would get very warm and then shoot like crazy.
