barrel-base gap
« on: January 09, 2004, 02:29:08 PM »
Any of you guys with the Encore 209x50 have a gap between your barrel and the scope base?  I tried the Warne Maxima and Weaver and both have the gap at the front(toward the muzzle). :?  I can fold a $1 bill and slide it about 1" or so back under the base.  I understand the gap on a tapered CF barrel, but the 209x50 isn't tapered.  Looks like it should sit ON the barrel the whole length of the base.  Thanks in advance.

Mine has the gap with a weaver base, but still shoots fine. I believe the only way to get no gap is to go with a custom 6-hole base like Virgin Valley. You would have to get the barrel altered which would void your warranty with TC.

I posed this question to T/C and got two different answers.  One said it's not suppose to have the gap, and the other said it was normal. Who do I believe?  The muzzleloader barrel is not suppose to have a taper, so why would the whole length of the base not contact the barrel? According to my caliper there is a difference in diameter of the barrel from the breech to where the front of the base sits.  Confusing as heck to me.

Thanks for the info on yours Slatecaller.

It is tapered in that area and they all have that gap so far as I know. Take a look at how the Burris base for the Encore is made.  Has a brass-tipped screw toward the front end to add rigidity.
WHUT?

Thanks Underclocked and Slatecaller.  I checked out that Burris. :D I have been told, by someone who should know, that there's no gap on some barrels when using the Maxima bases.  I consider myself to be fully Bulls****ed.

You can do what I'm going to do:  When my 6.5-06AI barrel comes in, I'm going to put a small spot of glass bedding between the scope mount and the barrel to fill in this gap and stabilize the mount.  A little heat from a torch would free it up if you need to remove it.
