Gouged Primers with my M57 Yugo Tokarev
« on: September 24, 2011, 02:18:03 PM »
I've noticed that I'm getting a gouge running from the firing pin indentation to the edge of the primer when shooting my Yugo Tokarev. The firing pin indent is nice and round so I am guessing that the Tok is opening a little too early and the firing pin is dragging.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I believe I probably need a heavier/new recoil spring and maybe a new firing pin spring, but I'd like to hear from somebody who has had this problem or is knowledgeable about how to fix it. It is not a serious problem as it does not damage the case as all (currently I am shooting reloads with Starline brass until, hopefully, the price of surplus comes down again). The load I am shooting is a 100-grain SWC over 5.1 grains of Unique.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve:  Who knows, that particular load might be a bit too hot for your particular Tok.  5.1 of Unique is not a over-charge but with a 100 gn bullet, pressures may be up.

Your firing pin may be dragging a bit but when you say 'gouge' - do you mean a scoring of the primer material or do you see what appears to be a double indent?  If you have scoring, that's one thing - a double indent can mean a hot load.

If you know how to disassemble that Tok, I would pull the firing pin and check it for burrs or sharp edges and re-sinstall with new Wolf Springs (Ardmore, PA).  Wolf carries entire spring sets for the Tok, for both 7.62 and 9mm calibers.  You should also be able to 'clean out' the fining pin channel and check for dirt or burrs that may prevent the fining pin from retracting properly, and on time..

BTW, the pin that hold the firing pin in place in the Tok is a 'split pin', even though mine looks like a screw, it is a pin and it requires a specific 'split pin' punch to drive it out so you can get the firing pin/spring out.  I do not drive my pins out all the way, I usually drive them out just far enough to get the firing pin and spring out but not have to worry about compressing the 'split' end of the pin to get it back in.

I would also check with the major distributors for Tokarev parts and pick up another firing pin or two - they are usually somewhat soft and should probably be replaced regularly (like every 5,000 rounds maybe)..  JMTCW and HTH.

I've checked everything over at least three times. One problem with the M57 is that the firing pin mechanism is different. Instead of a cross pin retainer, it has a retainer like the 1911 and a secondary spring and another retainer that looks like a top hat. I don't think the regular Tok firing pin spring is the same, but I'll have to do some research. Anyway, the firing pin spring seems just fine. I'll take it to the range tomorrow or Thursday and try it again. My main concern is that I don't want to break the firing pin as I've only found one place that has them and they cost $28.00 each. Also, I can only locate a used firing pin spring. I may give Wolff a call if it still gouges primers and see if they have a firing pin spring or if the usual Tok spring will fit.

Thanks,

Steve
