Anybody use AA #9 in the .454 Casull?
« on: January 07, 2004, 01:52:21 PM »
I'm almost out of H110 and I have a whole pound of AA #9, a winter at home with my daughter, and a reloading bench begging to be used while she takes her naps.  I have cast bullets ranging from 250 gr. to 370 gr. and some 300 gr. XTP-MAG.  Any suggestions or favorite loads with this powder?  I'm using a 12" Encore as my big-bore toy. :)

I load only Win.-296, which is almost identical to H-110, for hot loads in handgun ammo.  The AA-9 load, according to their manual which shows no data for cast bullets, for the 300 grn. XTP bullet. Start load 23.4 grns at 1428fps. from an 8 in. barrel. Max. load is 26 grns. at 1623 from an 8 in. barrel.  Depending on how hard your lead is depends on how fast you can push it. You will not go over presure with the same load and the cast bullets, but you may get very heavy leading depending on the bullets.

#9 will work very well.    Used it with all bullet weights.  Start off a little on the mild side and work up to the point you want.

This is a common but INVALID assumption. There is more involved than bullet weight. How much case the base of bullet occupies can really matter in a case of this size. If the base of the bullet is say just 1/8" lower it reduces case capacity by a couple grains or more. Depending on just where the cannelure and crimp groove are located on the jacketed and cast bullets respectively this is very possible.

A more accurate statement would be: You will not go over presure with the same load and the cast bullets IF they weight the same and occupy the same amount of the case's capacity. A minor but important difference.

the powder for a while in their factory ammo, but due to some inconsistenties of the powder at "at that time" they switched back to either 296 or H110? There is some load data on Freedom Arms site, that might give you an ideal on loads.

I've used #9 in the .454 for the last 10 or 12 yrs.  My experiments with this and other cartridges have shown #9 to have the same burning rate as 2400 but to burn cleaner.  I understand that Freedom arms also switched to #9 for it's factory ammo.  I also used H110 until #9 became available.  I have a Freedom Arms 6" and use .45 Colt case and 20 grs. #9 and a 320 gr. hardcast bullet for 1350 fps.  I also use this same load in several Ruger single actions, 6" at 1250 fps.  Not a max load in either
but heavy enough for anything that walks or crawls.  Also very accurate.
