encore barrel 24" or 26"
« on: January 06, 2004, 01:35:24 PM »
I'm getting ready to buy a barrel for my encore.I still dont know what cal. im going to get but was woundering if barrel length made a difference. I'm either going with a 270win, 7mm rem. or a 300mag.Will i gain anything compared to a 24" or a 26" barrel? I was told a 270cal wouldnt gain anything.I'll be shooting factory ammo in these guns. Also is their a big difference in knockdown power in these cal's. from shots anywhere from 50 to 150 yards" I usually shoot my deer in the front sholders useing a 270 with a 130 grain remington core-loc.Would the barnes x bullet do more damage for this shot?

I believe that the going rate is about a 10 foot per second increase in muzzle velocity per inch of barrel length.  The velocity, and therefore trajectory, difference between those barrel lengths would be very small.  From experience, I've used a .300 win mag loaded with 165 grain Barnes "X" bullets on south Georgia whitetails before.  The insides of the deer were turned to a steaming pile of goo.  For what you're doing, I'd stick with the .270.

Longshot , is your 300mag in the encore? I was woundering about the recoil it has?I plan to have a limb saver recoil pad added to my encore anyway. And was thinknig about a muzzlebreak,I dont shoot that often and always wear ear protection at the range, but what about a hunting situation, would it ring your ears when shot in the deer woods?Does barnes offer the x bullet in factory loaded ammo for these cal's.So many decisions, we have a gun show on the 17 and 18 of january in kingsport, i think i'll go over there and take a look around.Anyone else going? :D

Yep, Shootdoniebrook, I'll be there also.  Also checking out the Encore barrels.  I bought the 209x50 about a month ago.

I shoot the 300 mag in a 26 inch, Encore factory blue barrel and in a Ruger #1 Stainless with a 26 inch barrel.  I shoot .270 in a 22 inch Remington BDL blued barrel, a 24 inch stainless barrel Remington BDL and a 26 inch Heavy barreled Remington Sendero.  I shoot the 7 mag in a 24 inch blue, Remington BDL.   I reload for all of them.  This is what I have observed from my Chrony.

First, there is a major difference in the perceived recoil between the Encore and the Ruger #1.  I alway creep up on the stock of any gun and the Encore (being lighter) has bitten me between the eyes so many times you would think I would learn.  This summer it gets a 6 X 42 Leupold with 4+ inches of eye relief.
Second, the 300 mag is a definate step up from the 7 mag and the .270. using heavier bullets.  I use only 180 gr bullets in the 300 mag and it is a bit over kill on white tails in KY and SC.
Third,  If you reload using slow burning powders, and push the .270 to the max there is a 150 to 200 feet per second difference in my 22 inch barrel and my 26 inch barreled guns.  In a 26 inch barrel the .270 (with the right loads) starts bumping into the 7 mag factory loads in a 24 inch factory barrel.  The .270 has show me more variance in velocity per inch of barrel than any caliber I have used (I haven't missed many).
Fourth,  I consider all three caliber more than adaquate for any deer in North America, assuming you put the right bullet in the right place.
Fifth, Hearing,  I always wear hearing protection at the bench and never when hunting.  I can't ever remember hearing myself shoot when hunting.  I do not recommend this for any one and make my grand kids use hearing protection when possible when they hunt with me.
Sixth,  Remington bullets have alway done a nice job for me, but recognize that there maybe better choices if your rifle doesn't shoot these well.

I have 7 barrels for the 3 encores , so far. My favorite is the 26" 300 win mag. Mine are all stainless with composite stocks. I have had the wood stocks and the composite seem to absorb some of the recoil.  The Encore with the 26" barrel is 3 3/4 "s  shorter than my Remington 30-06 with 24 " barrel. I have been using factory Winchester 180 gr Fail Safes for deer and elk.  Will do some reloading when I use up the 6 boxes. Looking at different 165 gr. bullets for reloading.

Hi SDB,
All the info you received is good. I took note of the 50 to 150 yd. ranges. A 7mm-08 will take deer cleanly at 250+ yds, with less recoil, powder, muzzle blast, and destroyed meat.

I have an Encore in 209X50 Magnum and also a 26 inch .221 Remington Fire Ball accessory barrel!

I'd recommend that anyone who buys an Encore barrel, buy a 26", because the "lack of action" so to speak makes for a short firearm, even with a 26 inch barrel!

My 2 cents!

I have the Encore 24" in 7m-08.  With such a lite rifle there is quite a bit of muzzle jump.  I would go to 26" if in a bigger caliber.  The Limbsavor recoilpad is a very good choice.  It made a big difference on my rifle.

I am with onesonek, a 7-08 will serve you very well at 150 yrds and actually out to 300yrds wiht no problems.  Only the 270 you mentioned is not overkill for what you want.  Save some money and your shoulders, go with the one that doesn't say magnum.
