My First Coyote
« on: September 10, 2011, 07:36:43 AM »
:) , Yesterday, while coming home from and early season antlerless whitetail hunt, I spotted a young coyote nosing around a neighbors sheep...I had my heavy barreled .25-06 in the truck, but as I got out to make a stalk and hope for a shot, I picked up my old model 99 in .300 Savage...I have used it on big game in the past, but never a coyote...since this guy was in a sage brush draw, the shot would not be too long.. as I eased to a fence post he started to trot off...he stopped behind some light bush..while he was in the light brush, I figured I had best try a shot, when the rifle cracked he when down but bounced out the other side and slammed to a stop..I levered another 150 grain Power Point into the Savage and squeezed one more off at his shoulders...he crashed in a heap..it was my first coyote with the model 99 in .300 Savage... ;)  The first round had hit too far back, but the second was right on the money...surprisingly, the 150 power points did not open up to any degree on this coyote...looked like I had shot him with a full patch bullet... It was fun to take one with something other than a centerfire bolt action....I got the 99 after finding 3 boxes of Win. factory 150 grain Power Points at a yard sale..the price was $5.00 for ALL three boxes...After I had the ammo, I had to spend $500. for a rifle to shoot them..what a deal..but it sure has been fun using that old 99 for some of my hunting....

Congratulations  8)

The Coyotes here have become much more vocal in the last week but we have a lot of standing corn.

Harvest has started in some areas and it it is not too uncommon for the night time Combine driver to see Coyotes in the outer edges of the lights, pacing the machine, and waiting for a flush.

My dad has a savage 99 in 300 savage that I absolutely love to shoot.  Just iron sights and spot on at 100yds.  Congrats on that song dog, btw.  Even sweeter that you smoke checked it with such a classic rifle.
It's all a hot mess...........
