Great shooting cedar arrows!
« on: September 05, 2011, 04:03:41 AM »
For me, having to stay with the low draw weight recurve bow's shooting wooden arrows has proven best. I cannot get a decent carbon or aluminum hunting arrow to shoot well out of my recurve's. That's why for someone wanting to shoot wooden  arrows it will always be the smartest thing to get them from a reputable arrow smith. This is especially important when it comes to low draw weight bows. I shoot barebow/natural right off the padded arrow shelf, so having an arrow that is spined correctly with the right weight of point/broadhead  along with feather fletching becomes critical to perfect arrow flight and accuracy. Which in a hunting situation is of high priority. Maybe there are some of you that have had this same experience, if so any of your replies would be appreciated. Thanks! scout4<><

Scout4,
Like you I shoot barebow, both longbow and recurve. When I first started out in archery, some 59 years ago all arrows were essentially wooden and cedar. There were no arrowsmiths in my locale at the time so just picked up what arrows I could find. Most shot pretty good out of the longbow, Later on got into recurves and still no local arrowsmiths available, but did get educated on spine of arrows and bought accordingly. I have shot cedar arrows up until the mid 1990`s.Now I shoot only carbon arrows in all of my bows from 36# to 62#. The carbons can be cantankerous but perserverance eventually pays off. Recently made up some 4 fletch carbons untrimmed CX 150`s and lucked out as these arrows will shoot in my Cascade 53#, Dakota ProHunter 55#, Bob Lee 57#( recurves) and my Dakota
52# longbow! These arrows as I mentioned are untrimmed with 145 gr field points. I like the carbons for durability and consistent weight and longevity.

Hey streak! you are right, so many years back it seemed only a few custom arrow smiths where around. Where I live I do not recall hearing of any. However, when I was first starting into traditional archery I could get wooden cedar arrows from going to the bow hunters festival in Eagles Mere Pa. every September. There are many traditional archery proprietors who set up a small weekend shop. scout4<><
