30-30 revelation
« on: September 03, 2011, 07:34:50 PM »
Looking for a project gun, went to the local pawn shop and found a 30-30 revelation looks like its been road hard and put up wet. Price on the sticker is way high I thought at $270.00 but the dealer says he will give a good deal on it, didnt have time to look at it much, for the right price it would make a good project gun. It looks like a take off of a marlin, I'v never heard of the revelation and know nothing about one and was hopeing someone here may have a littel info on it, the ser.# starts with 11xxxx the trigger is mounted to the lever, wood neads to be refinnished forend has a good size chip out of it and cracked, the stocked is in good shap as far as wood goes but needs refinnished, metal is fare. any idea if revelation or someone elese made it and who and any way to date it.
If I do a trade in for it I have a old wenchester 22 short mod. 1890 I think,  has all the bluing off of it. cycleing it does just fine have not put any bullets through it yet.

YD
I have a revelation 30 WCF and am very happy with it.  Supposedly it is a Marling 336 under Western Auto brand name.  You can check on marlinowners to clarify.

In the beginning I was getting 2" groups but with some reloading work it will do better than I can and I still get just over to just under 1" MOA.

[ the trigger is mounted to the lever, any idea if revelation or someone elese made it and who and any way to date it.]

The trigger attached to the lever leaves out any Marlin - making it a Mossberg Model 472 (1972-76), stamped "Revelation" for Western Auto.

[wood neads to be refinnished FOREND HAS A GOOD SIZED CHIP OUT OF IT AND CRACKED, the stocked is in good shap as far as wood goes but needs refinnished, metal is fare.]

That makes it a $150 gun, TOPS.

Thanks for the replys. The $150.00 sounds about right, maybe 175.00 OTD with a box of shells.

Rangr44 has it right. It is a Mossberg. I have a Revelation 20 ga. pump shotgun. Don't have to look real close to see it is a Mossburg 500.

I am not a collector nor am I a firearms history buff.  That said, I agree that your Revelation sounds like it was not made by Marlin.

Revelation was the house-brand of Western Auto Supply stores and apparently they used multiple suppliers.  I own a Marlin-made Revelation 200 .30-30 as seen in the pictures below.  It is every inch a Marlin except that "Marlin" is not marked on the rifle anywhere.  FWIW I paid $200 plus shipping off one of the on-line firearms auction sites. It is very accurate and I will be hunting with it this season for mule deer and elk in S.E. Wyoming.

Well, about convinced myself to get the mossberg instead of the Marlin, the revelation is in a lot worse shape than the Marlin, it's definitely a fixer up and that's just what I'm looking for.

I've got one I bought several years ago for 100 bucks.  I really like mine, levers as smooth as silk, also plenty accurate for deer to 150 yards.  Only problem mine has had was a broken extractor when I got it.  I wish I knew where to buy a scope base for mine, Marlin bases won't fit, the screws are too large in the base.

demented have you checked out mid-way? I think I saw a weaver one piece base for it for around 9.00 or 10.00

I have a Revelation 30-30 and I love it! It's the most accurate 30-30 I've ever shot (I've fired several Marlins) and I've taken many deer with it. Mine has a 4 power scope on it. It doesn't get used much anymore since I've got my Tikka. But I'll never part with it. I like it too much!
Just curious if you ever bought the project gun, and how it is now?

I have one of the Revelation/Marlin .30-30s, and it shoots great.  I bought mine as a beater and have just shy of $200 in it AFTER replacing the broken/missing sights and cracked buttstock and forearm as it was when I bought it.  I also use cast bullets out of it and, while it drove me a little nuts at first due to the cast bullets, it now does 1-2" at 100yds on a good day, and 2-3" @100 on a bad day with cast at full power.  I dont know what it does with jacketed, as I put the last handful of jacketed loads through it when I first got it just plinking and havent bought any in a few years.  With as well as it shoots cast, I have no reason to waste money on jacketed.
