Words cannot describe my state of emotions by the time I finally got to shoot. Thank Gawd my shooting range is only 5 minutes from home, I didn't even have my CCW with me. :o

What you guys need to do, Rock Home Isle and Lakota, is set yourself up a "Go Bag" like this.  The bag itself is the $6 eleven-inch canvas tool bag from Harbor Freight.  A gun, some targets, and a Go Bag and you're set for a long range session.


 

 
See that little tool box at the 12 o`clock position in the last picture?  This is what's in it.

WOW!......Thats alot of stuff!
I never took my front stuffer to the range before, so I guess I never thought of having a range bag. If it didn't fit in the leather possibles bag I made, it didn't go along. I had loops and small pockets for the few tools I used to take with me. Nipple pick and wrench, ball puller and stuff.
Good idea though for the rifle range!

That is exactly what I need...it had been a while since I had last been to the range and all my bits and pieces had become somewhat scattered. Law of nature and Chaos I guess.
 
I started this last weekend, after we got back from the Trapper Days shoot, and I made out a list of what I need for each calibre. I have a great pattern for a shooting bag; so I'm sewing up a shooting bag for each calibre/gauge that I shoot and setting up the shooting bag so it has everyhting that I need to shoot that calibre (whether Flint or percussion). All I do is grab the shooting bag, and my Haversack and head to the range.

I've got one similar only it's a "go box".  Just a tackle box with all the assorted items.
 
However, I also make a habit of asking myself a few questions before backing out of the driveway.
 
Did I pack:
Gun?
Powder?
Patches?
Balls?
Flints/caps?
 
It's a great habit because I do it before heading out for the day's hunt - whenever I take my muzzle loader whether it's to the range or woods.  While I'm asking myself these questions I envision whether I checked the status of the powder horn before loading it, whether I checked the ball-bag, patch material, and cap tin.
 
Gun, powder, patch, ball, caps/flints - the rest is just fo-faraw.

That "Go Bag" is a neat idea! I have done a similiar thing for all of my centerfire Lee Hand Loader calibers with zip up bags that I got from the Army surplus! Really helps keep things organized and easy to find when I get ready to reload a certain caliber. I think I will check out Harbor Freight and get some of those bags for my muzzleloaders!

They sure are Black Jaque.  I made those patches from my old pair of "footie" PJ's.  I sure miss those PJ's.  ;D

Evidently your barrel survived the short starts without damage lakota, or this thread would have been a real downer.  I've done it twice over the years and got the willies before checking the barrel and finding no damage, much to my relief.

I glad the rifle in question is a .45 caliber flintlock. Light powder charges and at least some pressure could be released through the vent. I wonder if a larger bore caplock loaded heavier would fare as well?


 I did this exact thing with a gorgeous .45 T/C Hawken once...it was the 4th or 5th shot, short started then got to gabbin with my buddy, forgot to ram the load home. Wound up with a severly ringed  barrel, ruined the accuracy of that rifle. It pays to keep your mouth shut when loading and always double check.

   I always try to kinda keep away from the crowd when on a Trail or Mountain Man Walk. Also, when taking shooters around the course I keep back and keep the talking to a minimum. In others words, keep distractions away...And, yes, ringed a GPR Barrel.....
