question about barrel
« on: August 21, 2011, 01:25:34 PM »
I have an older frame,I just picked up 7-30 waters carbine barrel ,it fits fine but when you cock and fire it something stops hammer right before it hits firing pin is the split lug the problem? It has a split lug on it but they do not work independent of each other

The lugs or bolts are supposed to work together and not independently.  They may need a little polishing to engage properly with your frame.  If they do not engage properly the gun will not fire.

Depending on on your particular action,  make sure you have the rimfire centerfire selector in the correct position.  No need to ask why I suggested this ;D

The hammer will not reach the firing pins when trigger is pulled but it works fine with my 375 jdj barrel ,is there some kind of safety under the firing pins that stops the hammer from hitting them

Is your JDJ barrel also a carbine barrel? Are you using the same buttstock for both barrels? It sounds to me like maybe with the 7-30 carbine barrel, that you are now using a buttstock, where you were using a handgun grip before with the JDJ? I suspect that the problem you are describing is due to the bolt being too long that you are using to mount the buttstock to the frame. It sounds like the classic problem of the bolt is bottoming out and not letting the hammer travel fully to the frame face.

If you do nothing else but simply take the buttstock off of the frame, does the hammer then go forward all the way with the 7-30 waters carbine barrel mounted on the frame?

If this is a "Yes", then you only need to add a couple of washers under the head of the bolt that you are using to mount the buttstock onto the frame.

This problem does arise from time to time.

The jdj barrel is 23" ,I am gonna try taking locking lug off jdj and put it on waters ,the one on the waters is the split lug with the barbell through it,the one on the jdj is where they are machined on the lugs so they will work independent of each other

I was looking in the facts at the top of the page at the blowup of the receiver the part labeled 8-1 that is below the two firing pins is what is stopping the hammer from hitting the firing pins on the waters barrel but it does not stop the hammer when I have the jdj rifle barrel on there
