Did you ever try a "gob" of worms? It's a San Juan Worm with several (4-6) "worm" parts tied onto one hook. You can even mix the colors, which is a good way to try different colors at one time. Try purple, pink, red, and brown.
Even if you don't have any fly tying equipment you can make these by using segments of a rubber band (instead of chenille) tied to a hook.
Works especially well in the fall when the brown trout are spawning. Use some weight and try drifting one into the deep quiet pools.
Google "gob-o-worms" for some ideas.
