Buffalo Classic 45-70
« on: August 04, 2011, 12:22:20 PM »
I think I read somewhere a while back about how softer alloy bullets weren't as accurate as harder alloy bullets in the 45-70 buffalo classic. Anybody have an opinion on this? This is my first post and am looking to get into reloading so I want to make sure I know as much as I can before I start.

You can probably spend several weeks, months or even years researching that debate!
If you keep the velo under 1450ish you can shoot wheelweight (unquenched), or softer, plain base bullets in them just fine. The trick is fitting the bullet to the throat (ie, not trying to use too small a dia. bullet, regardless of alloy).
If you want to go faster use quenched WWt or lino alloy, etc.
You might want to check out the Cast Bullet Forum here on GBO.

When I got my BC, also got some 45/dies and tried cast bullets with various powder charges.  Not so good results.  Then tried Remington's 405 grain JSP.  They ain't cheap like reloading, but I know no longer how I try to get cast bullets to shoot well out of the BC, they'll never equal what the Remington's can do.

It's a hunting rifle, so I don't shoot it that much, just enough to stay proficient and have enough on hand for the coming season.

45-70s have successfully been shooting lead bullets for a long time. Im sure there is a bullet/load that will shoot very well, but if you really dont want to and like to shoot bullets with coats thats OK by me, too  ;D .
