What is a good round to get for shooting varmint in a 12" package? I will go up to 16" if no one can come up with anything great in a shorter package. I have a bipod and a tripod so 16" is ok.

In a 10 or 12 inch package what do you think is the best case size to get a good burn? Can you even get a good burn in that small a package? Or I'm I just wasting my time looking for a small package varminter?

I think the 308 case size is the largest to get close to a full burn in the 15"ers. Or what is a better case size in the longer package? I like the .204, .223, .22-250 or even the .243. 

Oh yea I am not reloading right now we just moved and all my stuff is still packed up and have not found a good place to set it up(you know where the "wife" will let me lol), so would like an off the shelf or mail order round that I can reload later. I have a 308win in 15" and a 500 S&W mag in 12" and I am in love with the 12" package (I have even started going to the 10" in my 'tender)

I know every one has a fav varmint round please help me find me one.
The 308 is a bit much for them. If I shoot coyotes I would like some pelt left for the tanners to work with. lol

I love my 12" 223 Encore. It does well with factory loads, better with handloads. I use a 2X scope so I limit my shots to 100 yds or less. I just moved home to coyote country and look forward to trying it out when the fire season is over.

The 17DT is a real keeper for varmints and predators in a handgun, but if you're not reloading and don't do wildcatting it's out.    From the 4 you mentioned, I'd go with the 22-250 out of either a 12" or 15" barrel.    I shot a factory 15" quite a bit on my Encores when they first came out, and it was pretty impressive at long range with handloads developed for it.    Never tried it with store bought ammo though.  FWIW

You'll get a full "burn" with all the cartridges you mentioned and, of the ones listed for your purpose, I'd probably go with a 223 or a 22-250.

Flynmoose : I am kind of leaning to the .223 also. So when I start to reload would I want to go with fast powders? What is a good powder for the 12"?It's looking like IMR-4227 is good.

Ladobe : I have never heard of a .17dt can you tell me more?

Grumulkin :Are you saying that I will get a full burn in a 12" with a 22-250? Looking in my old Lyman reloading Handbook 46 edition the .223 looks good with faster powders like IMR-4227 in the 10". Is that what you used?

Small package critter getter?


How about a 22 K-Hornet, 218 Bee or 221 Fireball.  Small case, powder efficient, and easy to load.  I think anything bigger by case size would need a barrel longer then 12".


One other option you may want to consider in a 12" barrel would be either a 25-20 Winchester or 30 Reece.  Again, small case, powder efficient and easy to load.


I would personally opt for the 30 Reece.  Case capacity is similiar to a 32-20 Winchester so light loads would be easy to obtain along with high velocity stuff from Carson Reece.

7-30 Waters: thanks but I want something I don't have to reload now and that I can get off the shelf or mail order. Maybe you can order those I will have to look. I like the idea of the k-hornet, bee and the fireball and your right about the case size but I may want a little more power I will go through my books. I think the 25-20 is making a come back in the cowboy shooting but I know nothing about the 30 Reece. Plz help me on that one.

30 Reece is a custom cartridge.  357 Magnum necked down to 30 caliber and currently chambered by MGM barrels.


Of all the cartridges I suggested the 25-20 Winchester is available in factory loaded ammo.  I have been toying with the idea of getting a 12" Contender barrel in this cartridge.  Very good for small game and coyote sized critters.


Muzzle velocity is around 1450 fps and 400 ft/lbs of energy.  Zero the cartridge at 50 yards and your -3.5 inches at 100 yards and 13.5 inches low at 150 yards.

I'll give it a run, but all my records are in storage and its been too long, so I can't quote ballistics from memory...
 
The 17DT is the brainchild of Blaine Eddy, developed from a shortened 220 Russian case blown out.   He followed it with the 17 Athena on a shortened PPC case.   Later on I think the 17DT was also done from a shortened PPC case.   Case design (short, fat powder column) makes them ideal for short barrels, and they simply scream in longer ones with laser precision.   These are awesome killer cartridges in the field.   Blaine is a generous and exceptional person... and one of the premier coyote slayers in this country.   He has very high ethics and great skill as a hunter.   Loved the long chats with him discussing wildcats and our other first love predator hunting back when we were friends.

 7-30 Waters:  believe it or not but I can get fact' rounds for all but the k-hornet, the bee looks the best on paper out of all non-reloaded. but they all are high priced. I want something I can get good with. I know when I get back to reloading one of these would be best but till then I'm going to keep looking.

Ladobe: like I said I'm not reloading now but from what I read that is a hot little round in a 10" package. but I will tell you this when I get back into reloading I will give that round a long hard look...but now if I was going 17 it would be the rem fire HMR. it looks great on paper out of a 10 inch. Thanks so much and yes I do love the wild cats just not right now.

I have a Super 16 in .223 that I load up for Yodeldogs and vermin and I load down for edibles. I'm going to do more development on the .223 with Trail Boss.
I'm currently in the same situation as you, moved and all my reloading crap is in crates on the racks in the garage.
 
If I had the dough I would get the standard Hornet.

I like the portability of the 10 inch tube. I think the .223 works better with a long tube and loses a lot in the shorter lengths. 22 Hornet I believe would be a better compromise in a short tube. Factory ammo is available and when you get to reloading again you can tailor your loads for your intended purpose.
 
My Super 16 .223 lacks portability but I like a lot. .223 standard and factory loads are a little much for bunny hunting. Its been awhile but I loaded up some small game loads about 22 Hornet velocity that don't completely destroy a rabbit. The 16 inch tube is not bad for muzzleblast. If I had the dough I would invest in a portable easy shooting Hornet and have all the performance I needed. If I needed more, Rechamber to the K-Hornet.
