? RdFx Waxed dirt
« on: July 28, 2011, 04:00:23 PM »
Hey Lee
I think I just found a use for my wifes little green house. Seen as she doesn't have any plants in there right now and it's pretty hot. I know I stashed a couple bags of peat moss in there today:-)  But it got me thinking I could set a piece of plywood on the bench and mix up some waxed dirt. I'ts been several years since I made any waxed dirt and I'm wondering how much wax to mix in. Last time I did it I layed black plastic on the drive and spread the dirt and wax on that. I don't remember how much the dirt wax ratio was though. I do know if I use the green house I can kind of walk away and not watch it as close because nothing will disturb it. I know I have at least a couple pounds of flake wax in the freezer in the garage.
So what is your mix ratio when you make your dirt?

Mac it all depends upon the type of dirt of sand you use.  If there is alot of  absorbant material (humus) besides dirt   , it is absorbed  quickly  and rest of dirt might not have enough wax.   Just plain sand takes the least.   I  start out with    a quart of flaked wax to a gallon of dirt.   Test  it before doing more.    You put water on it and see if it beads up.   It should be  darker color showing that it absorbed the wax.  You can put less in next batch  (gallon) and see if it repells the water.    If you have just one source of dirt  you can figure your wax to dirt ratio and   mix and put in greenhouse.  Black totes or black plastic works good...  Make sure you dont have clumps and your wax is COOLED ALL THE WAY before putting into    containers to store till season, AND store in cool place....
I saw alot of trappers buying flake wax fm Art.  With this heat no one will ship  becuase of melting in delivery truck.

Ok now that the board is back up
Thanks Lee
I'll give it a try when I get back from NTA. I would guess you'll be there and we can chat some on the subject. Been a busy few days here so messing with the dirt will have to wait till after NTA. Can't see the weather giving us any big break, so it should stay wax dirt making conditions for at least a while yet.
