New 45-70 ?'s

I pick up my new sb2 45-70 on monday and was looking for tips or advice on loads they tend to like/dislike or other helpful info on that rifle/caliber. I do reload but am new to the 45-70. Thanks.

Congrats and welcome to the forum!
 
With the handloads it can be mild to wild and anything in between.  All depends on recoil tolerance and what you want to do with the 45-70.   I would suggest buying a box of Rem 405 SPs and a box of the Hornady 325 grainers or the Federal 300 grainers and try these.  See what you and your gun like and then you might have a starting point for your handload development.  Both the Rem 405s and the Hornady 325s are offered as reload components if you like them.

Ive found it to be a very user friendly caliber, use any book data and start about in the middle of the powder charge range should be just fine.
FWIW, 405gr. cast  over 20.0 of Trail Boss is dandy.

Welcome! I have 4 handi 45-70's and all of them shoot the rem 405gr very well. One shoots the hornady 325's very well and 1 shoots them minute of barn. haven't started to roll my own for the 45-70's yet but willbe soon.

Both thejanitor (Brent) and I are enjoying 405 Remingtons running about 1950 fps for a distance/hunting load.  It is very accurate out of our Handis.  It's got a pretty stiff recoil, but you can load lighter bullets and less powder for a very mild and accurate load.  I really haven't found much it didn't like.  I got my best factory ammo results with 325 gr.  Hornady Leverevolutions at 2050 fps. (velocity as per Hornady, I have not chronyed them).

I like the hornady 300 grain hollow point out of my buffalo classic load to 2000 feet with the data from hornady book so I am probably getting a little more out of it with the 32" barrel

I have been using a 450 grain cast bullet RNFP, from Lee mold, over 24 grains of IMR 4198. Have gone up to 28 grains, but like the accuracy and rcoil of 24. I do not chrono and seldom shoot paper targets. Acceptable accuracy with open sights, off hand at metal targets out to 200 yards.
Of course the same bullet over 9 to 10 grains of Unique is great for plinking.

The Hornady 325 grain Leverevolution shoot to 1" to 1.5" at 100 yds out of both of my handis and are very effective on deer.  I get such good performance out of these I do not try to hand load.  FYI, they are phenominal out of my Marlin 1895.

Thanks for the great info guys, I cant wait to get out and put some rounds down range, if it ever stops raining. I picked up some horn 325 leverevolutin to tide me over till I get the dies and bullet mold in.

A 405 @ 1350 will kill anything.  Don't beat yourself up.

The .45-70 is very easy to reload. I've loaded many with 300 and 350 gr cast bullets on top of 14 gr of Trail Boss for an accurate, easy to shoot load.
I have some loaded with AA 5744 but I've yet to try them. For case lube I really like the Hornady One Shot.

I've had great luck with Hornady 325gr. FTX for accurate shooting, but had some inconsistency on expansion.  I also had excellent accuracy from the Hornady 300 Gr. HP, but they expand quickly and did a lot of meat damage on the deer I took with it.  I now use the Hornady 350 gr. FP and find it versatile and accurate.  Still doesn't kick too bad and holds together well.  I haven't used them myself on bear or other large game, but have heard good things on it's performance on those also.  My go to powder for the .45-70 is Alliant Reloader7.  This works excellent in this cartridge and .45 Colt (carbine/rifle loads only) and lets me load from 31gr. for trap door level loads to 52gr. barn burners.  The 52 gr. loads really let you know they have been fired, so they aren't for those who don't want much recoil.  I do find that the Reloader7 tends to push more than kick, but that's probably just my perception.  My best accuracy load and the one I use for deer is 47.6 gr. RL7 with a CCI Large Rifle primer.  This has been echoed by several here and other boards as a good range with this powder for accuracy.  I'd recommend doing a ladder of 47  /- 3 gr. to get your rifle's sweet spot though and then break down to .1 gr. increments to zero in on it.  8)

+1 on the trail boss loads very mild load 405 lee bullet hardly any recoil have bc and one with 22'' barrel can't see much difference in accuracy very easy to reload.

Buy some Hornady 325gr FTX's I just sighted in my new 45-70 today shot a 3 round group that all touched each other at 100 yards
the recoil was stiff but it shot great wow I'm impressed with this gun.

Greetings from the Great State of Georgia,
 
   I have a 45/70 Hndi and must say that it is among the most accurate rifles I have ever owned. I have posted pictures here before that show a 100 yard group shot on a playing card that made a very tight cloverleaf group which measured 1/2 inch. And this with a rifle that costs around $200. ARE YOU KIDDING ME ?? Mine loves the jacketed 350 gr. soft nose on top of a healthy charge of Varget. I would feel confident shooting most anything out to 300 yards and regularly ring an 8" plate at that distance. This set up is especially effective shooting coyotes, so I have given up shooting them with my Hornet. Man what a rewarding sight to see a big old bold male yote take one of those 350's through both shoulders. Some folks would say overkill. I simply see it as an accurately placed varmint round. Longer live the 45/70 !!

Ya sure can duplicate the BP ballistics with a number of powders (mine likes Trail Boss real much , but a 'full to base of bullet load', not that wimpy 'start' load ;D ).
