Turkeys and Tenders!

I live in an area not blessed with a lot of game big or small. And the big game catches a lot of heck from poachers.

The little woman kept on me six  year ago to shoot her a Turkey. Not being a Turkey hunter I guess I got lucky my first time out. Since the first one I learned I have a lot to learn about hunting Turkey but have managed a few while trying to learn the ways!

I took this 23lb. bird with an Encore in 22HORNET.





My second bird came on a rainy day. Shot at a lasered 136yds. Not a pretty hit but it put the 26lb. Tom down.

Wonderful pictures.  They are greatly appreciated during the summer months when hunting season is closed.

I wish we could use something other than shotgun on them here in Wisconsin.  Good huntting Dave!

     Last season I actually had some guy tell me that he didn't think I was hunting turkey in a very sporting manner by callin' them in to my handgun.  He was carrying a semi-auto 12ga that shot 3.5" shells.  I just let it slide............... :o

I here that all the time. I just don't let it bother me. I always tell them to use their shot guns because they probably couldnt hit a target shooting one projectile!

The pressure is pretty hard on turkeys in Wisconsin, and a warden told me that if single projectile guns were used, and a hunter mistook a decoy for a turkey, a hunter could be killed.  With the typical turkey shotgun being scoped and with an extra full choke and really hard shot I am not sure that a hunter in the line of fire is lots safer.

      When I was a young teen we had no deer round here(hard to believe now, but true) and turkey was THE big game.  I studied on the siuation some and decided that the way for me to kill a turkey was to take my new trusty 22 rifle and just shoot him in the head.  No problem right....well I soon learned a little about turkeys.  One of the first lessons learned was a turkeys head is NEVER still.  Even when the bird is otherwise motionless, the head is in constant motion.  That was well over 50 years ago and I've done-in my share of 'em, but I still haven't shot one in the head w/ said rifle.  My aim point is right at the point where the wing sweeps down and then breaks back to the rear.
