I have an 18 inch .38-55 and a 16.5 inch .357 Maximum; both wear low power glass and reside on BC Carbine stocks.  I owe the .38-55 to the great cunning, wisdom, gunsmithing skill and foresight of our wonderful, clever and intelligent moderator, quickdtoo also known to his wife as "Tim".  Thanks Quick, again and again.  (I call him "Quick" cause I ain't his wife.)

If you thought that was bad, you don't even want to hear the story of how the Maxi came to be.  It is so complicated even I need help recalling the details.  I've got an excuse though, I'm old.  I CAN tell you Larry Trotter (trotterlg) was the catalyst and made a 3 way trade among members here possible.  Thanks again, Larry.

Both rifles are compact, accurate, swing easily and make large holes in critters and things.  If you reload, they become even more versatile.

Pete

I use a Handi with old H&R straight grip wood butt and forearm stocks. The barrel is also an H&R 157 barrel in .357 Mag. with plain factory open sights.  Makes it very light, compact, and very "handy".  It does what it needs to do!!

Here's the .357 Maximum.  The red dot has been replaced with a scope.

Mines a 16.75" 30-06 with a 2x pistol scope mounted in a scout scope set up.

I built an under seat rifle rack so its out of site when the seat is flipped down.....Short 06 on the bottom with a Estwing Camp Axe on top.  Nice to know you always have it with you in the truck just in case, both the rifle and the axe.

and yes it is LOUD!!!

Doug,
That 30-06 looks great and very handy. How is the recoil? Accuracy is right on the money. Great job!

Actually recoil isn't all that bad... noticeable difference between the little guy and my Remington 700 shooting the same loads the Rem is worse off the bench the  short one has a worse muzzle blast though.  I have a short video shooting 165gr Hornady superformance out of it I will post when I get home... can't figure out how to do it on my cell.

danny, thanks for tha reply... many here do not like that barrel... more reason for me to proove it can and will perform. factory guarantee tolerances are just 2" !! i think we have
gone closer than that. and i know many kiyots and cottonmouths have been
terminated from both my tractor and combine platforms  ;D
i rank it up there with all my other accurate handi's... and yes cw, it isa personal preference. my kinda like'n.... but thats jus an ol'cajun swamp man's waya look'n at it
that knows nuthing.... ;)

So do I have to have a truck to have a truck gun?  How about a minivan gun, or a sedan gun, or a 'cycle' gun?  Like what long gun do I 'discretely' carry when I'm out pedaling around the trails?

And what is a truck gun really?  I see rifles and shotguns.  Only thing in common is they're short... most of them.  Different geography I guess.

I live in suburbs, so my 'vehicle' gun would have to suit my local needs.  No pigs, no 4 legged cyotes, no quick dinner bambis, no snakes (so far)...

A rifle - that'd be a 'zombie' gun, because I got no spread to patrol.

A shotgun... a 'zombie' killer also.

Thought about this... figure a .223 because ammo is plentiful and it can do close and reasonable far...  accurate and effective on most things.

Gotta be something I can part with easy so I don't cling to it when it becomes a liability.  Yeah, a cheap .223.

Or maybe a 20ga shorty... they're cheaper, and good to 60yd maybe with slugs...

Are you're truck guns your default handi you shortened because the rest of yours were too 'nice' to cut and throw in the trunk...

Or did you think this out and plan it.?  I feel left out cause I got no truck.!

Just wondering...
Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

In a 5 1/2#ish gun with 2 3/4"x 1 oz. Foster slug loads it will be around 40 ft.lb. recoil; thats why mine is called Ol' Ugly OverKill. It aint for the meek and 'do not bench'. I do not want to know it likes 3" shells, much less 3 1/2"!
