Ammo for 7mm-08

If you don't handload and you are looking for a good cartridge to shoot in the 7mm-08 would you guys recommend the Hornady Light Magnums over standard velocity rounds. The only info that I gotten from around here is that the standard velocity rounds seem to perform better in the short action rifles. Thanks

If you are talking about deer/antelope hunting then yes I recommend the Hornady Light Mag over any of the other IF your rifle shoots it like mine does. In mine both of their bullet choices stay well under an inch at 100 yards with the 139 BTSP holding a slight edge. Besides I've used that bullet a lot and like it.

I've used the Remington 140 grain Core loct also and it too is one fine deer killer. I've not personally used any other factory load but those three.

Both but the SST only on paper not on game. I think I only had one box of them as I recall. They are almost as accurate in my rifle (sub MOA) but not quite as accurate as the BTSP and I've used it on several deer and know how it does so I'm just sticking with them as long as Hornady keeps making them.

I am looking to try the 120 gr Nosler BTs in my 7mm-08 Ruger #1. I have heard very good things about how they work on deer etc.  and the BTs have always been among the more accurate ullets that I have tried.

The 120s are supposed to be built with side wall construction that makes them hold together and peentrate deeper than a lot of BTs in other calibers. Next reloading session I'll give them a try but won't get a chance to use them on deer until fall.

Anyone else had any experience with them?

I have shot many brands of factory ammo in both of my 7mm-08s, but the most accurate ones have been the light magnums.

I have only used the BTSP, not the SSTs, both on paper and on game.  The 139 BTSP light magnum hit with some authority despite the fact that they are little.  I have used them on deer and they work great.  The exit wound was a nice size and the deer didn't go more than a 10 yards or so.

The 7-08 is my favorite deer cartridge, and the light magnum ammo is my favorite ammo for the 7-08.

I loaded up some 120 gn Nosler BT's for one of my sons in their Rem 700LS Mountain rifle.  The accuracy was very good (3/4") and they did a great job on both whitetail and antelope in 2003.  You will not get a big hole.  Entry on both was about a nickel going in and a quarter coming out.  Now these were fairly lite loads and both were behind the shoulder lung shots.  One at 70 yds and the other at about 250 yds.  Neither went farther than 60 yds.

The Hornady LM 139 Grain SST bullet delivers. Here is a picture of an exit wound of a coyote shot at 40 yards with my new Stainless Tikka T-3 lite 7mm08. Needless to say there was not much running going on.

I hope this works!
