Match Grade Machining Question
« on: July 08, 2011, 08:34:18 AM »
Hi All - I need some advise.  The item (G2 Pistol and/or Rifle barrels in .300 Blackout) are available from Match Grade Machining Company.  The problem lies in the fact I know nothing about this firm, AND I would really appreciate some input on the experience of others with this company.  Can anyone help?
Thanks, Joe

Match Grade Machine is as good as it gets. I have had several of their barrels (still have 3) and love 'em.

Turnaround is reasonable, and quality is fantastic.

Great company, I have had one of their barrels and it shot great. I see and talk to them at the big gun show in Tulsa.
They used to be the old virgin valley company and I have one of their mounts on one of my contenders They also are one of the sponsers here on Gray Beard ,look for the black and gold header that comes up with what looks like a Ruger number one on it.

@sweetwyominghome

I almost ordered an MGM .260 the other day, then I decided to wait a little longer to see if one shows up.

I see you shoot 120's out of yours, what twist did you order?

My .260 was purchased used and has a 1:9 twist. My MGM barrel in 6.5 Bullberry IMP (aka 6.5x30-30AI) is a 1:8, which is the rate I prefer in anything 6.5mm.

The previous owner of the .260 had developed a wonderful load with the 120 grain BT, and I saw no need to experiment any farther as I also got a ton of those as component bullets with the barrel.

But the barrels I have had with a 1:8 would digest everything from the stubby 85 grain Sierra HP through the streamlined 140 A-Max and Berger VLDs -- and group all with extreme precision. Within reason, you can't overstabilize a bullet, but you can certainly understabilize one. And that's why the 1:8 is my preferred twist in anything 6.5mm.

They have good customer service, but I've had some issues with the barrel i ordered.  They did fix it, but it took several attempts and took a long time.

Overall the Stratton's seem to have really got their act together as MGM, do some great work and for very affordable prices.   Some of the remnants of their sorted past might still slip by now and then in business and quality, but they do seem to stand behind their work no matter how many attempts or time it takes.   They are still a small town "Southern Utah" company though, and that explains a lot if you had ever lived there like I did.   I bought and highly recommended their work when they were at Bullberry, not as VVCG for good reason.    But if I was in the market for a custom barrel today they would be my first choice, and for TC furniture their brother in law Justin Sip (who has his own shop).   FWIW-YMMV

I recently bought an MGM .22WRM barrel for my G2 Carbine frame to take backpacking with me.  Took exactly 4 weeks from order to delivery (exactly what they said it would take) and was to my exact specs.  T-C scope mount fit perfectly and the barrel fits the frame TIGHT.

Excellent communications with their customer service department.  And I like the little "barrel sock" they ship the barrels in; I will use it to carry the .22 WRM barrel in my backpack when the .410 barrel is on the frame and vice-versa.  It is just flexible enough to go over the little scope I have on the rifle barrel.

I have only shot the MGM barrel with two brands of shells so don't know how accurate it really is.  But with the Remington Premium it shot 3 into .8" at 100 yards from a bench (not a Ransom Rest or anything like that; just resting the gun on my left hand).  And the old original Winchester 40 gr hollowpoints would do about 1 1/4" regularly.

I use this gun for a "walking varminter" mainly on California ground squirrels which infest the National Forest camping areas.  It has a 17" bull barrel fitted with an old Redfield 2 3/4" scope (I used a 3x9x for the accuracy tests and barrel break-in).  Most of the shots are quick and under 50 yards.  Doesn't miss at that range.  During hunting season I keep a factory 23" .410 barrel on it; best cottontail gun I've ever had except my Win 37 .410, and a heck of a lot handier.  I've killed a couple of quail on the wing with it, too (missed a couple, too....).

Next I'm getting an MGM centerfire G2 barrel; just have to decide which.  I highly recommend them.

Purchased a MGM barrel in 30/40 Krag for a G2. Its quite a carry gun poking around for deer in the bush and shoots better then I do. Factory ammo.

Looks like I am finally getting a .260. Worked out a trade tonight. 26" blued MGM with 1/9" twist. Can't wait to get it and get some reloading stuff ordered. I have been wanting something in 6.5 for a while!

26" .500 S&W from MGM. Shoots lights out!! Service excellent. Fit and finish excellent. Couple minor problems (due to .500 recoil) they worked out and barrel is fantastic.  Jeff Stratton was man of his word and I would and in progress of ordering another barrel from them. Trying to decide between .338 WM or .300 WM. Oh those terrible decisions....

I only have one complaint about MGM they will no longer ship to or sell to Canadians something about an export permit even though they could just sell it to me and ship it to a FFL dealer/exporter and I would have a Canadian importer bring it in.

I also prefer their scope bases to any other make on the market.

The US export laws that are now in place are absolute bull schit... speaking of bull because MGM will no longer export I ordered a NIB 23" s/s bull T/C Contender carbine barrel in 6.8SPC from another source he will be shipping it today or tomorrow to the FFL dealer/exporter in Blaine, Wash and my importer will bring it in for me going to cost me an extra appr $150.00 to use their services.

Now that is bull...

and yes I would have ordered the barrel from MGM...

Cook, thats no good man. Sorry to hear it is such a pain. Only barrels I will buy new are MGMs. I may pick up others used from time to time, but now if I am buying new, it comes from MGM.
