Thinking of getting a 37 anybody got likes dislikes?
« on: July 05, 2011, 05:30:05 PM »
I ended up with a 33 helping out a buddy who bought 1 to many at the gun show. Got scared and had to sell one  before getting home to wife. Anyway got a guy that wants to trade a mdl 37 for it. I don't really like the subcompact 33, not a big fan of the 357sig. Anybody had dealings with the 45gap. How does it shoot, recoil? I've got a 21 and like it but it is almost to big for my hand. Appreciate anybody's thought's on the matter.

I have a G38 and really like it and i am a shooter. I find the size comfortable with mass of .45 and no significant loss of velocity. Great carry size and weight. Ammos difficult to find but reload is the way to go.

I belong to two large action pistol clubs and shoot pretty much every weekend year around in IDPA, and Steel Challenge matches, with a falling plate or USPSA match thrown in every now and  then.  In the years since the introduction of the "Gap", I have picked up exactly one Gap case while scrounging brass. That says a lot about how many are in the hands of shooters. I wonder if the Gap will even be around in 10yrs. Currently brass is available, but if there is not much demand that will soon change. I reload, so I could trim down acp cases to use in the Gap, but wouldn't bother as there is no advantage to the cartridge over the acp. I'd prefer the .357 Sig over the Gap. If you decide to sell the gun, at least there might be factory ammo available for it. Or you could buy a .40 conversion barrel and have tons of ammo options.

i can understand your aversion to the sig....the problem is that the gap is just like the sig....it is the fix to a non-existant problem; an answer to a question no one asked.

I traded for the 37, I just didn't like the subcompact 33. Can I just do a barrel swap to 40 cal or will it need a new slide also?

The 33 would have been easily converted to .40 with just a barrel swap. Not sure what's available for the 37. It's not a very common model. Check with LWD. Good luck!

I have a few 37's and a 38. The frame is smaller than a 1911 or Glock 21 and fits my mitts very well. Use mine for CCW and plinking, do a few local combat/plate shoots. Very, very reliable more so than the plain 1911's and glock 23 used own.. Have a nice stash of one-fired brass and reload with cast lead bullets (4000 rounds so far). People give me GAP empties they find. I bought 500 one fired brass for $20 !! The 45 GAP is a caliber that most people (who have never shot one) totally HATE. It works well, mine are nicely accurate, just isn't an ACP. The slide of the 45 GAP is as wide as the 45/10mm glocks, so converting to a 40 s&w is not an option. Cheaper to buy a whole new gun in 40  if you favor that caliber. I noticed the Gap does not have the fierce bark and muzzle flip of the 40 S&W. The PA state police moved from the 40 to the 45 Gap, notin the same effect in their study. I prefer the Gap over the 40 for that reason. Also ( not to start a flaming war) But I have witnessed (in person)  two semi-auto pistol Kabooms--- both times it was a 40 S&W with questionable reloads. The 40 is a higher pressure caliber and combat shooters  like to go max, so it is a good idea the scrap your brass after so many reloads.

I'm looking at getting a police surplus GLOCK 38, a Lone Wolf Barrel replacement barrel, and a .45 ACP chamber reamer to deepen the chamber .45 ACP and stick with ammo that matches the .45 GAP OAL. This would be the 165 & some 185 grain loads. And see how it works out. If it don't, I always have the original barrel to use.

Bad idea!  The GAP and ACP case heads and extractors are different - very different.  The GAP and ACP cartridge case sidewall profiles are, also, different from one another.  These differences in extractors and case head angles might cause:  feeding, firing, and extraction/ejection problems.  (In fact, at least some of the time, it's impossible for them not to.)
