"boaring" Contender episode = one dead piggie
« on: July 03, 2011, 08:16:11 PM »

It took some experimenting to get the angle of the green L.E.D. light just right so that I could see from a distance, but it seems I finally have it set up well enough. Tonight, I happened to look through the kitchen window and saw dark splotches where there should have been light. I grabbed the binos and could see there were several hogs milling about.

So I grabbed the nearest rifle, which happened to be my Contender with a 23" 30-30 AI barrel on it. I had a rest set up a few yards from the house, so I stepped out there, waited for the best angle and touched off a round. Even these deaf old ears could hear the audible "whap" of bullet breaking bone, and the hog didn't do anything but go straight down.

The 150 grain C-T BST entered on the shoulder, wrecked plumbing above the heart and demolished the lungs before exiting just in front of the opposite shoulder.

In this heat, there was no time to weigh the hog, and even the photo was extremely hurried (I quickly fired 2 frames before the piggie was carted off).

I am really beginning to like the hog light. Last week, I had it set up poorly and could not see anything unless I was quite close. But by moving it to where the edge of the beam illuminated some of the brushline behind the intended target area, it allowed me to see both the game and the crosshairs decently enough for utility work. I might have to put a 2nd light on Santa's list later this year...   :)

You sure do take good pictures Bobby, But then I think I read somewhere that is how you made your living.

Many years ago in Florida, my friends family owned a ranch. Hog hunting was leagal year round and so were lights for hunting hogs. My friend owned a wonderfully accurate Sako vixen varmit rifle in 222 remington. It was a true 1/2" shooter. We would drive the ranch & pick off a small boar with a spotlight & the Sako, whenever we needed meat. We were selective with the hogs we shot, usually a little boar under 100lbs.

Of course nowdays hogs are a big problem and a lot of landowners shoot them on sight just to keep them under control. My friend inherited the old homeplace last year & is living there once again. He sent me a picture yesterday morning of a medium size boad he shot off one of his feeders just so the deer & turkeys could get some of the corn.  ;)

I chuckled when I first saw your thread subject Bobby as most Contenders shoot so well they are almost "boring" to shoot.    ;)

Enjoyed the account and picture of another dead hog, so thanks for sharing them.    Hogs will never be "under control", so DRT is good, very good.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus
