With the talk of Ol Ugly, and my wanting a "ATV" shotgun. I have been motivated to work with them.

I have a number of old single shots in stages of dis repair and function. Of coarse the H&R's are my favorite, but I like short shotguns so not all are H&R's.
Two are missing, my 20 Gages. One is up at our "camp" and the other at my brothers.

Here is what I have here:



From top to bottom:

A Old 12Ga J.Stevens


A MUCH older 12Ga H&R take down


A Savage 12Ga 220 with peeps I installed.


A  H&R 158 12Ga again with peeps I installed.


Lastly another Savage this one a 16GA DBL M311


The 20GA are almost identical to the other two H&R's shown above.
One is a 158 and the other is a model with a tang lever. But not as old as the second pic.

Cylinder bore. ;) All are 18.5 -19" barrels.

The DBL, 220 and both 158 H&R's shoot slugs to the point of aim at 50 yards into softball sized groups.

Great shorties, love the H&R with peeps and barrel band that gives the gun a real classic  look the 16 gauge? how regulated did the barrels stay after being cut down? Thanks for showing them , shorty pics are my favorites have a good 4th

The barrels are silver soldered along there full length so no issues.
I added a 1/8" silver bead and filled the center of the rib with steel putty.

They are drilled and tapped. The front is a contender front site and the rear a Williams.

I luv dem shorties!  Now you got me rootin' around in my barn lookin' for my sawall. ;D  Just read another post about 28 ga slugs so I think I may have a plan.  8)   BTW, did shorty #1 have a short stock or is it a real thumper that needed the slip on pad?

It had a very old and hard Pachmayer pad screwed to it... Not shaped at all, just screwed to the butt... kinda "fugly"..
I don't have any old style pads, only a Kick EEZ and a DE-cellorater.. don't really want to put one of those on it. So a old slip on fits the bill untill I get a correct pad.

Its a Uncle Mikes barrel band sling mount...  Nothing special.

What if you could get someone to put on one of those old "poly choke" adjustable set ups....   and also wonder if that would count as "brl length"???

If it was at least silver soldered on YES it would be.
MANY a too short barrel has been fixed with a welded/silver soldered on extention....

Just remember that the barrel must be legal length with the poly choke disassembled

EXCELLENT POINT!!  YES the base part that gets attached to barrel MUST cause or allow the make the OAL of the barrel to be at or over minimum federal length guidelines...

Its one of my favorites too!  YES its Walnut, it shoots Rem Sluggers easilly into a softball at fifty. Buckle down and shoot it will keep them on a base ball. Pleant accurate for my intended purposes.

They all look great. I am setting here now with a 20 ga. Topper in my lap trying to find how to measure the barrel. Is it overall from the open breach to tip of barrel or is the chamber figured in to this? I was planning to go with 20 inches from tip to butt of barrel.

With the barrel installed on the frame and the action closed insert a wood dowel rod down the muzzle until it contacts the breech face.  Mark it and then pull the rod and measure the distance, this is your barrel length, so the chamber/throat count towards you overall barrel length.  18" min.  for a shotgun, better longer incase you have a problem cutting and recrowning the barrel.

this thread inspired me to do a shorty on 20 gauge I had leaned up in the corner. havent got the sights installed yet but they're commin. anyone ever have a shorty threaded for choke tubes?

I thought hard about it, but in my case would need to have this done...
Its not really cost effective for me. I have had Briley tubes put in a 28Ga I have and love the benefits. I did buy a Rem tap and have had three 12Ga barrels done for REM chokes. Simply because I have so many here, I use the guns allot making it more cost effective for me. My handis are defensive, or gotta have a gun with me, gun. The distances I would use them at wouldn't require the choke.
 
But no handis.

First up I need to confess that I am not a very experienced shotgunner.
My reading has indicated that you have to pattern whatever you have, be it cheap or expensive, to really know how it patterns at the distance to want and with the loads you intend to use.; all else is speculation.
It has also been said that nowdays, with the various shotcups available, that you can effectively change the patterns by a choke size just through your choice of cups, etc.
I do know that my cyl. bore H&R 'BUCK' barrel patterns quite well at 40yd. with my bird load of #6s, so well that I wouldnt even have to change to my bird barrel unless I anticipated long shots.
The 'downside' of barrel length/swing momentum is that most often mentioned for 'shorter' barrels, but if you hit where you want, who cares.
