forend fit
« on: June 27, 2011, 05:21:48 AM »
I own a sb2 frame that has a 7-08 & a 223 factory fit barrel to it, also a 50cal muzzle loader barrel not factory fit. The question is both forends fit off center buy 1/32" towards the right side, has any one else had this problem? What is the fix? The plastic  piece on the forend  are both centered to the forend. Thanks Kernbigo

It is somewhat common for there to be some variance between forends, they are all made to fit universally. The forends can be sanded with a dowel rod wrapped with sandpaper to make the gaps more uniform. I would reseal them afterwards, if they're wooden. There's more info in the FAQs regarding this subject. ;)

I bought a new 35 whelen and the lug was spot welded to the barrel off centered.  Rather than send it back, I just opened up the hole in the fore-end and pillar bedded it so the forearm was centered.  Recently, I've heard of several others that were the same way. Also, the store where I bought mine had another in stock that I looked at and it was the same way.  Seems that sometine was off in the assembly process.

The forends were relieved on the barrels and still off center on 3 barrels and 2 forends! Kernbigo

Then as beaver mentioned, I would check the forend lug alignment.  You'll have a few decisions to make depending on what you find. H&R may repair them, check with them to see. Always ask for a return label, it'll save you a buying return postage. ;)

It is aggravating to look at (so I dont much look anymore) ;)......
I wouldnt send an otherwise good fit and good shooting barrel back for something like that; just dont want to take the chance.....
If relieving the screw hole doesnt help, or sanding only a bit, then something is off, likely the lug, but what bugs you is the spacer sits off. So, remove it, fill the holes with glued wood plugs and do a careful center-up, hole spot and drill it to fit the frame where you want it and screw it back on. Pay attention to how the wood meets the spacer though, but it usually doesnt take much and it wont bug you anymore.
