New 357 barrel
« on: June 26, 2011, 04:24:03 AM »
I just got my new 357 20" back from H&R  8)

What scopes and mounts are you guys using to clear the hammer.  Currently I'm just running a short Barfska 4x ( enough power for what I want to do).  I don't have to worry about clearance with this one because it is short enough to not reach the hammer.  However, being forward of the hammer I could use a scope with more eye relief.

What loads are you using.  I'm looking for specific data to try.  I had some components around already so I've started with 4.5 gr of HP-38 and 158 gr RN lead.  I know there is a break in period for barrels but for now this is shooting around 3 MOA @ 50.  Good enough for hunting but I prefer a more consistent setup.

I prefer an accurate load over a hot load.  I'm fine with something in the 900 to 1000 fps range.

I had a 223 handi that had a hammer spur.  Where can I find one of those for this one?

thanks guys.

First to answer your question on the scope.  Most of my Handies wear mid price range 3-9x40s or 50s on medium to high rings.  My old eyes like the larger objective lens.  Recently, however, I was looking for an inexpensive 4x32 to play with on my 32-20.  I found the most inexpensive scope on ebay...an Aim 4x32 with rings and free shipping for 37.95.  I bought it as a joke on myself, thinking to put it on my 7 year old grandson's .22.   I was amazed.  It is sharp and clear and takes adjustment well.  I bought another and put it on my .45LC carbine.  Now, lets see if it handles recoil.  100 rounds later it is still going strong.  Below is the 50 yard sighting in target with the .45LC and the Aim scope.  The last 3 shots center are one hole.

Now for the accuracy.  My Handi Maxi likes stouter loads...158 gr. .38s at 1000, 158 gr. Mags at 1700 and 180 gr. Maxies at 2 grand.  If you speed them up, I think they'll tighten up.
Good luck,

Pete

My .357 Handi loves the plated DEWC's rev'ed up to about 900-950 fps. One hole accuracy out to 50 yards when I do my part. Great load for the revolver too. I load them long, about .200" sticking out of magnum brass.
It would be a good bullet for break in, cheap, long bearing surface and plated.
I gave up on scopes and have my old Reflex sight on it.

Gun barrels are just like us fellers... WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT!!! Some like Red heads some like Blonds, some even like other fellers.. but lets not go there...  ??? :o ::)

What to try is gonna depend on what your looking to do with it?  Target velocity, Top Velocity or Top accuracy? Then from what kind and weight bullet. Then are you hunting with it?? Get the picture?

One of my best loads in my Marlin Lever and Colt Whitetailer is with a 140Gr bullet, H110 powder a Federal Case and a CCI 550 primer. max load of powder. (SAFE IN MY GUN) Shot a couple deer with the Whitetailer and the Speer 140Gr bullet with good results. I wouldn't use it form the rifle as I feel its too fast for the bullet on game.

My two favorite bullets for mag use on deer sized game are the New (er) Speer 170 GD-HP and the older Hornady 158 XTP-FP.
