Rimless rounds in Encore?
« on: June 26, 2011, 02:35:23 AM »
I've had two .223 Handi rifles that were inconsistent on extraction.  Not all the time PITA, just occasionally didn't extract.  I've been told that break actions are just better suiter to rimmed cartridges. I can see how that may be, but not all break open guns are built the same. Do those of you with .223 Encores and Contenders find that you have some issues, or do they work well?

my only experience is a nef .223  but if I bought any break action or ruger #1, it would be rimmed cartridges.

I have several rim less in both Encores and Contenders. The only one that ever give me a problem was an Encore in 7MM Mag. The extraction would hang on the belt. A little filing and it ejected with no problem.

IMHO any break-open action is better suited to rimmed cases for easier operation.  If properly adjusted and in good working order the action will do it's job just fine....it's usually clumsy. old, arthritics fingers(like mine)that cause the problem inserting or removing the cartridge into or out of the extractor.  Gloves make the problem worse as well.  I much prefer rimmed cases, but I haven't thrown my 223 away either. ::)

I haven't had what I'd call difficult extraction with my 223, but since the extractor is spring loaded it doesn't give up the spent cases like the extractor on the rimmed rounds.  At the bench it is just an inconvenience, but on a hunt I think that with gloves or cold hands it could cost you a game animal if a follow up was needed.  All of the rounds I presently hunt with are 30-30 based (7-30 and 357 Herrett), and I'm going to try to stick with rimmed for hunting.  Like Hopalong7 though, I'm not giving up my 223 or my TCUs.

I've never had a problem with a rimless case in an Encore and I've shot a BUNCH of different barrels.

The only rimless cased cartridges I've shot in a Contender are 222 Remington & 204 Ruger and I've had no problems with them either.

The agility and grip in my fingers is waning rapidly w/ age :'( and I need all the built in advantages that I can stack in my favor :D.  Using a rimmed case is just one small thing I can do.  I will say that I shoot my Encore in 308Win and 260Rem a good bit and don't see as much of an issue with the larger cases that I do with the 223 size case.

  Thanks for all the responses.

The reason I posted this question is that my father in law is considering a target/ occasional varmint barrel for an Encore.  He wants dual use with a muzzle loader for the other barrel.  He's looking at .223 because it's economical, easy to get ammo and components, reasonable performer, all the usual reasons one looks toward .223.  Having had some trouble with my Handis in .223 and having heard that rimmed rules the break open roost, I wanted to ask around a bit and see how other Encore owners do with the round before he makes his decision.

I'll get him to look at this thread before he makes up his mind, which is in no risk of happening too soon.

I have had zero extraction problems with rimless cartridges in Encores or G2s.
I should add that I don't hunt so a follow up shot is not necessary with my
steel targets, good thing with the arthritic fingers!
