scopes for a marlin 1895
« on: December 31, 2003, 01:04:48 PM »
I have switched to a marlin 1895 45/70 using 300 gr hornadys.
Wanted to 350 gr lead , however the 300's patterned better.

My only complaint is the scope. It is a 3x9x40 bushnell. I made the
decision to gft a new scope.

The question is which scopes seem to be a good fit for this marvelous
rifle? I hunt MI public land and farm land most shots 50 - 125 yards.

Happy New Year  :D

I have a Leopold 2-7x33 VXI on mine.  The right magnification for the range of the gun and small enough that it looks good on the gun to me.

thanks bullseye , good choice. I was looking at an elite 3200 firefly,
however I thought it make gun top heavy.

I have a really nice Leupold 1-4x on my .405 that is right sweet.  I also just got a new Weaver V3 and put it on my .35 Remington to replace a broken (never lend a scoped gun to a clumsy step child) K3.  While it was $100 cheaper than the Leupold, I was surprised at how little I gave up with the V3.  I especially liked the 1x setting for quick and close shots.   Keeping both eyes open I can place the cross hair on the target without taking my eyes off it.

Leupold III 1 x 5 x 20 or Leupold II 1 x 4 x 20 seems to be the best.  Have a Leupold III 2.5 x 8 on my 1895m and a Leupold III 1 x 5 x 20 on my 1895 LTD V - the smaller lens does not hurt your field of view, and the difference in light gathering is not detectable to any human eye - they simply look most appropriate and hand handle the recoil, im my opinion.

warrier1,
I have a 1.5-5X leupold on mine with low rings.  It's just about the right height for the drop of the stock and has plenty of eye relief.  It has enough  magnification for longer shots at 5X and a good field of view at 1.5X for closer shots.  Just about perfect for my needs.

warrior1. Hi. The Leupold is a good choice, as it has excellant eye relief & that is one of the considerations to be thought about, in addition to clarity. When I went to add a scope, I found myself in somewhat of a cash problem.  On my 1895S I mounted a Bushnell Banner 1.75-4X32. This scope is actually a shotgun scope designed to be mounted on a cantelever shotgun mount. It has a full 6" of eye relief. I have found it to excell out to 100 yds. I'm sure it would do well at longer ranges. Check it out at http://www.bushnell.com/productinfo/riflescopes/banner.html
There was a member of MT that went by name of Big Redhead that designed & sold a mount for the Marlin rifles. I have it mounted on his mount. I think it's called the hunter scout mount. If you want info on this let me know.

Which Scope
« Reply #8 on: February 10, 2004, 08:26:20 PM »
For my 1895GS I selected the Leupold Vari X 1  2x7x33 and am extreamly pleased.I have shot some very stout loads thru it and not once came close to getting smacked with it. Razor sharp optics, the best warrenty you can get,and you can also change the reciticel to another of their other types for as little as $55.00 later on if you want to. I have the Leupold QWR'S and have taken this scope on and off several times just to see if the zero stays true and it does.It may cost you a few more hard earned green backs but it's well worth it. It's variable does't shift between the powers settings  either.Rock solid scope for the money, that will stand up to the mighty 45-70

PS:

I found another good scope as well right here on GBO Home page at the optic zone.

warrior1 -

When I scoped my 1895, one of th e most imprtant criteria was eye relief -- I had absolutely no desire to join the 'Order of the Red Crescent'.

When I found the Leupold VXII-2-7x33 my search was over.  This scope provides 4.9" eye relief and is small enough that it still looks good on the Marlin.  I tend to keep it at 4.5x, but I'll often crank it to 7x for load development or down to 2x (and the full 4.9" eye relief) for my heaviest loads.

Scopes for the 1895

warrior1:  You didn't say what was wrong with your Bushnell....  I was going to recommend another Bushnell, the Dawn to Dusk 1.5-4.5x32.  I bought two, put one on an older 303 Brit and the other on my 6.5 Swede, and love them both.  If your shots are limited, or if you are limiting your shots to 125 yds, one of those Dawn to Dusk scopes should be just about perfect.  I get better clarity and picture than I do from many of my older 3-9s.  Mikey.

The first time I fired my 1895 with a 3X9 on it, my safety glasses saved me from a nasty cut. That day I bought a Simmons 4X Shotgun scope with 5.5 inches of eye relief. I love it. Bright picture, and stays zeroed. Plus it was only $89. Could have pay more, but so far, after 5 years of shooting with it, it hasn't given me an excuse for getting anything else.

45/70 with Leopold's Scout Scope
« Reply #12 on: February 19, 2004, 11:38:07 PM »
I have a “Lever Scout” rail mount and a Leopold. 2+ power Scout Scope. It has super long extended eye relief.  Also you have no problem shooting with both eyes open. Made for the quick shot in the bush as well anything out to 100 yards +.
I also have a Firefly 3X9X40 Elite 3200 by Bushnell for this rifle, which can be switched quickly with the “Lever Scout” rail mount I have on my 45/70 Marlin. It’s great in very very low light situations and when and if more magnification is preferred.  I will also make mention that it can be switched either way in seconds with the quick release rings that are on both scopes.   :D

You'll get a lot of answers, but one thing you might want to check is the eye relief.  I went with a Leupold VXII 2-7x33 because it has 4.9" eye relief instead of the 3" that is common to many others.  That extra eye relief is your insurance that you won't become a member of th "Order of the Red Crescent" when firing top-end loads.  I shoot 460g hardcast at 1812fps, generating around 48 pounds of recoil, and the scope hasn't hit me yet.

Mount it in Warne Quick Disconnect or Leupold Quick Release rings and you have the best of both worlds, glass and iron sights.

I have a Leupold VX2 in 1-4x20. Great scope and a perfect match to the 45-70.
