Ol' Ugly OverKill

Thanx to Bikerbeans, I have replaced the stocks with an old 'Speedstock' on O.U.O.K., the 12ga. 'H&R 'Buck' smoothbore self abuser. The set up allows for two reloads up the buttstock in a spring-loaded port. It adds a little weight and has the old factory recoil pad so it maybe helps tame recoil a bit; at least it didnt hurt me too bad on two WW Forster 1oz. slug test shots. The vintage of the Speedstock and the Buck barrel are probably close, so it is a good matchup, though I dont know if they were ever paired from the factory.
Looks like its ready to find a place for me to take it lookin' for Ol' Snarley Boar.
(next step, then maybe Im done, will be an insert barrel in 357M or Max, since the barrel has open sights)

I grew up reading books; still cant get used to my wife's E-Book thing........words still make pictures for me though.
I got used to this forum stuff, then had the PC crash and now am on an I-Mac, and a learning curve........one of these rainy days when Ive got time (yeah, right!) I really need to learn to do pics, I know I do.

Don't feel bad gcrank I've had computer for about 15 yrs. still don't know how to send E-mail, didn't get my first cell phone till 54 yrs. had to find the youngest kid on the job handed it to him and said how do I turn it on,dial and turn off,cameras no idea.

I just got the charcoal loaded into a split reed to make a drawing pencil when I found out you blokes like color pics........
Now I find out that digital (went to the proctologist) means fingers AND other high tech stuff........
I was havin' no luck findin a slot in the top of this magic box to drop a drawing into anyway!
FWIW, a friend shot OverKill today with a factory Federal, turned to me and said,"dang.....thats Gnarley, dude!"

Adding a schnable forestock is the easiest way to get a more classical look on any of these, and the CR 45Colt Carbine one is the same length in Walnut (shorter than the BC and TM forestocks). With a TDC Walnut PG/RP butt you have a nice pair too without true custom wood costs/work.
I have thought about more of an Express Sight rear notch, the adj. plate in this sight could be rather easily replaced, but a '1 standing, 1 folding' British style would be so nice.

Yeah A British sight configuration would look good and probably very functional!
Don`t know your feelings about slings but a barrel clamp style might add a little more adventurous look to the overall gun with nice leather.
I really like the looks of the shotgun as it is now! But sometimes with a little innovation and creativity you can sometimes surprise yourself and end up with a real neat creation!

As "bikerbeans" mentioned don`t forget the 3.5" reamer, along with that you might want to take the recoil pad off and install one of the mercury type of recoil system to handle the extra recoil of a 3.5" " artillery" round!! While the recoil pad is off could also drill some extra holes in the back of the buttstock to add buckshot for extra weight to dampen the recoil.

Shoot "gcrank1" it is only money!!

The 'Speed Stock' runs that spring loaded plunger right up the same spout the Merc would use; there just aint any hole left. It 'seems' like it is acting a bit like a recoil reducer, I dont know if the spring in conjunction with the extra weight is it or just some weight. I had tried some buckshot filling the hole before this stock but didnt like the weight bias so much to the rear, so I didnt mess much with it.
I use a nylon sling with a 'slip over the barrel loop' and a QD on the butt. It doesnt need a forward stud and fits everything. When on it has that Brit sporting rifle look. I only use a sling when my hands are full and when hunting remove one so it doesnt catch on things or encourage me to not have a gun at hand. I have one of those Uncle Mike's type barrel clamp studs in a bin somewhere; with my sling I just havent needed it.
BTW, the genesis for this was an article in a magazine about the big single barrel rifles and smoothbores used in Africa and India (not everybody could afford the doubles even then), and to see (feel) what the recoil impulse of a 'low end' Africa gun would be like. This puppy goes just under 6# now and the ft.lb. of recoil calcs out to like a lighter end 375 H&H, and that is enough for me! It, and the Tracker I's are dandy for this; if you do the rifled slug USH you would be more like the heavy big bores were, but that would reduce the recoil (bad, huh?).
If I was to be in real dangerous game country I would not use a single shot by choice; my momma would think I wus dum.......

Well  sounds like all you need now is a "pith" helment, and load O.U.O.K. with some good slugs and then go and seek out a big ole "Porky Pig" and then enjoy the porkchops and ham!!

Why do I suspect no-one is surprised and several are laughing........?
Well laugh all you want, I will be the one returning from the bush to sit under an Acacia shaped tree in a comphy folding chair to sip a gin & tonic  ;D.

Keep us posted on any more "upgrades" that you might do to O.U.O.K.! Especially if you go the 3.5 reamer route :D
Do you have a huntable population of hogs in Wisconsin or do you have to go to a preserve or out of state?
Looks like with the setup you have now that would be a good one shot "bang flop" gun with the right slug.
I`m sure that "R.Ruark" would approve as he was a strong proponent of "use enough gun"!
I have read almost all of his books including the "Old Man and the Boy" and the sequel to it.
I think the only one I have not read is the "Honey Badger" and that is on my list to read.

The DNR tells us we have some Russian boar runnin' wild that can be bagged on sight if one has any kind of hunting license, Ive seen some tear-up but it is probably wild turkey. This gun would make good turkey medicine with the right load if not too distant. I have punched a pretty tight pattern at 40yd. of #4 in a shot cup.
I would like to find somewhere, not too distant from WI, to go after Snarley. I dont hunt much anymore, just enough to keep the varmints down, and my wife lost her taste for venison after chemo some 15yrs. ago., pig she can do. I think it was smelling the venison cooking while the chemo was in her that made a bad association.
Ive always enjoyed the Africa writers in the sporting publications, Fynn Aaagard was probably my favorite in the contemporaries, and Ross Siefried (Sp?). I well remember Fynn saying at one point, that he had,"long ago given up the the urge to see how small a caliber he could take game with".
I regret that I passed up a chance to go to Rhodesia in 1971......who knows what could have become of that!

I like the "Speedstock". Haven't seen one before. Does it look like someone halfway handy with wood could fashion one from an existing stock? What sort of cartridge stop does it use? I am assuming from your writeup that it uses it existing stock bolt hole. Thanks for any help. G66

Im certainly not an authority on the 'Speedstock' (or anything else!) and havent measured the hole size but it may be a bit larger in dia. than normal.
aA sring sits down first on the bolthead, then the 'follower', a shotshell sized steel slug that has about half hollowed out for the spring.
On the butt end is a steel slug that fits from plate or pad to the back end of the loading 'port' and it has one side at the port angled for the shell to clear.
I think somewhere on these forums pics of the pieces were posted in the last year or so, maybe someone can link it.
Easiest would be to post a WTB in the classifieds.
