Magnizum fire starter
« on: June 07, 2011, 06:23:26 AM »
Would a block of Mag. thrown into a fire burn? And I was wondering if you could take a hack saw and cut small silvers to get the shavings from the cut and still use the cut slivers safely?

dust or small slivers will burn very hot and are good for fire starting.  but nothing will happen by throwing a block into a fire.

Yes, I use the shavings for fire starter but I was more wondering about making shavings with a hack saw for future use, power saws with the heat build up I don't think would be a good thing.

A block of mag thrown into a fire will indeed burn. In my experience, it needs to be a very hot fire with a good bed of coals to get it going though. I've also lit small blocks of it by hitting the corner with a butane torch. If you want some real excitement, squirt some water on it after it lights (from a safe distance).

The old Lawnboy mower decks were all magnesium, and the drill press with a new sharp bit makes a bunch of shavings in little time- just store them in a old med. bottle. The chips that look like saw dust from the chainsaw don't light well with a spark, but the long sharp coils that are thin light very well with a  spark or match.
A friend started a fire and afterwards he couldn't find his magnesium block with the little striker on the side... about 10 minutes into the fire there was an intense bright light that lasted 5 - 7 seconds.... found it.  ::)

As a FF in a wildland rig learn to toss dirt on burning VW engines, rather then water.

My experience was with water from a brush rig on a couple VW Bugs engines.  A shovel along with roadside dirt works great.  Vehicle contents saved but owner is mad because his engine is covered with dirt.  Cannot make some people happy.  ::)

This one sure helps make the point regarding mixing burning magnesium with water.
