Every day stuff

I know this is a survival skills discussion forum....the fact is Im more likely on a daily bassis to encounter a dead battery or flat tire before Im going to brush up against a hoard of bloodthirsty zombies.

Dead truck battery, came to find out ya have to run the truck least 1 hour each week to keep the battery up, without that, the battery will most likely be too discharged after a week and half to crank the starter, juce all drained off by all the new crap the Big 3 have been putting in ther vehicles.
So if you happen to think Oh boy get one them solar battery maintainers and plug in the lighter, Thats what ole Rex'y did and 3 weeks latter went out to start truck.....Nada! the solar battery charger overcharged the battery and boild out all the cells, if your going to solar maintain your wheels you have to use a charge controller! Duh I shouldda thought it through and read the directions better I guess, so after buying another battery and a charge controiller, Im just wateing for some technological mishap (fuze or cloudy week) to deny Rex transportation when He wants it.

Seems to me your timeline is off.  We've got farm trucks that will sit for a month or more regularly and still fire.  Boats, ATVs, tractors, mowers, etc... have all been known to go a month or more between uses as well.  I would put the figure at closer to 6 months, although I wouldn't disagree that going long stints, particularly when it's cold, shortens battery life.

A trickle charge is your friend...

2009 chevy 2500HD according to tech rep at Ak Chevy dealership had me chaseing sparkey before he finaly said that the onboard systems all draw off the battery and cycle in and out of sleeper mode, to just disconnect the battery was a bad deal as only Chevy authorized programmer can reboot all your onboard systems, Im not so shure Im on anybodys time line but my own and when I want to work the vehicle, instead Im fussing with Battery and charger and such. winter here 30 miles above the arctic circle it pretty much is plugged in anyway, also has a battery maintainer wired in with the block & battery blanket heaters, just was odd to have a Chevy tech Rep say plug in a charger if It was to sit for longer than a week.
Yes Rex came from a time and place where equipment on the great plains worked as it should.

My 89 Suburban will sit for 2-3 months at a time with out running at all.  Starts just fine.  Now we don't have that cold of winters but the spring-fall months shouldn't be a problem for your truck.  Why would the electronics need to be reprogrammed?  It doesn't have to be reprogrammed when you buy a new battery...  the software is all on EPROM anyway.

We have the same problem with 2004 and newer vehicles , we also have a GPS on the trucks . The older ones last a couple weeks longer but the GPS runs them down. My dad had a 92 F100 that could sit for 6 mos with out a problem.
 Gee we now have gas that last a couple mos. and ele set up to run down the bat.

The newer the vehicle the more of a problem this is due to the residual draw of all the electronic bells and whistles. Not just GPS systems. Security systems, body computors, Eng computors and such that are never totally turned off when you turn off the ignition. Heck my hondy accord knows when the keys are within 10 feet of it due to a RFID chip in the key. If it does not recognize the key you cant even unlock the doors !!  You cant just go to the hardware store and have a spare key made for you car anymore. You have to buy it from the dealer for $$$$$$$

ain't that the truth... something without electronics except for the battery and alternator.  No chips anywhere, just plain, basic car.  Would prefer something small with a diesel and a manual transmission.  Something on the order of an old jeep but with a small 4 banger diesel in it.  Would definitely need a fully synchro transmission in it since I hate double clutching and grinding...

I keep one of tha jump/air compressor boxes in my truck just incase. It also works the Battry TV when power is off and starts the outboard when trolling bat goes down to far.

Its a plastic box thing that has what looks like the ends of a jumper cables with maybe 30 inches of wire comming out . also has a press gauge and air hose . You plug it into a rec or cig lighter and charge it. When you need air or a jump hook up and turn on . Portable power

had a M-Farmall with a magneto that we did exactly that with. No stolen battery and it ran on butane so no stolen gas either. Just had to be sure to pop the clutch right or you might have to pull it back to the top of the hill. ear
