I need a little help distinguishing this firearm. I have recently acquired a Sako Vixen, .222 Remington. It is the L461 action, with the Bofors Steel barrel. The gun is in 95% of the original condition, blueing good, bore excellent, and the stock does show some wear, character marks from seasons in the field. That is where my problem is. The stock is a gorgeous blondish light color with good markings. The question I have is that all of the Vixens that I have seen, in person and on-line, do not have this type of stock. I don't think that it is a custom stock due to the fact that the rosewood cap on the pistol grip has the profile of the fox head, which signifies the vixen. There are also light engravings of what seem to be pine cones on the floor plate and trigger guard.

I would like to sell this firearm, but I don't want to cheat anyone by telling the gun is something it is not. Thanks in advance for any information.

I have never seen a Vixen decorated as you described, of course that doesn't mean there were none. I'd bet money that it is a custom rifle of some type. These actions and barreled actions were readily available for many years. They are of very high quality!!

Cowboy : I saw a vixen with the same blond colored stock at the last gunshow I attended the caliber was also 222 and I considered buying it until I turned it over and saw where the previous owner had left it in a guncase and the exterior of the barrel had rusted so I pased on it.

Sako made different grades in each of their models. Me, I would fire off a letter to Sako to find out exactly which model I had so as not to cheat anyone including yourself. Lawdog

I have the exact Sako you describe. Purchased it in 1972. It is factory, high quality and a gun to be proud of. It is the L461 model. My stock is very blond also.

Cowboy 9,

You own a Sako Delux Vixen. The delux versions all had the blond wood and engraving. The Vixen had a fox on the pistol grip, the Forester had a pine tree and the Finbear had... you guessed it a bear.

Send me the serial number and I can tell you roughly when it was imported.

What are you going to ask for it?

I don't really have an asking price for it yet. I am not positive what to even ask for it. I got it for a decent price as far as Sako's go. In my opinon, the gun is probably 90-95% of the original condition. Does have some character marks from being hunted with. Those were put on before I owned it. I haven't even run a shell through it yet, probably won't if I can sell it. I also have 100 nickel casings that came with it. The guy was going to reload for it, but never did. The casings are new.
