Outboard vs I/O vs Inboard
« on: June 02, 2011, 03:57:36 PM »
With all the bad weather this spring, will get the boat in the water in the next day or 2. Started right up, got the bottom painted a couple days ago. Not right away, but down the road a couple years, will probably be looking for a little bigger boat. Got a 20' Grady White, with a Mercruiser I/O 170hp.
Would like to get something in the 23-24 ft. size. I happen to notice that a couple boat manufacture's, don't even offer I/O's or inboards anymore. They went to outboards, even on some as big as 30'.
I got to wondering, with company's like Yamaha and Honda making some pretty big 4 stroke outboards, has anybody done any fuel economy tests as to which engine configuration will give better gas economy. 'Course with Volvo offering diesel I/O's, that would probably  be the best. But, would the extra $$$$$ for diesel actually pay for itself. Just kinda rambling, but if anybody has any facts/figure's or just an opinion, would like to hear it. gypsyman

I started out with a sail boat and 5hp ob kicker, fun but not good for fishing. Went to a 17' aluminum with 35hp Evenrude, good fishing and on gas. Had to have a cabin cruser 26' with Merc Ib/ob lots of trouble. Then went to 31' fly bridge with twin IB's, 220 gal. tank cha ching! Now I'm where I should have been all along 18' aluminum StarCraft Super Fisherman with 115hp E-Tec. I fish Lake Erie and this combo is great on gas! Oh the 31 is 4-sale.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

As you know the IO drive has more parts then any Outboard so there is additional maintenance. Next up would be 4 cycle Outboards, lighter then IO's and easier to service the entire unit since they can be removed from the boat; Lighter weight and better torque at lower rpms are the 2 strokes. A bit harder on fuel but less parts to replace. No below line water openings !! That would be a biggie for me.

Diesel IO's are more fuel efficient offset somewhat with increased weight. Do you use the boat that much to offset the initial costs?
Pump price for Diesel is higher then Gasoline in a lot of places.
I would go with the Outboards 2 or 4 cycle whatever you prefer. One more plus is the replacement of the Outboards, a much simpler affairs then the other options.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.
